2020 has been a roller-coaster ride
forformer Chelsea midfielder Newton.
The 48-year-old left Stamford Bridge
in February to become Trabzonspor’s
assistant coach, but when Huseyin Cimsir
was sacked for failing to win the title, he
was hired on a caretaker basis. In only
his second match, he oversaw a 2-
win over Alanyaspor in the Turkish Cup
final, which landed him the job full-time.
Newton spent eight years at Chelsea
after returning as Roberto Di Matteo’s
assistant in 2012, but felt ready for a new
challenge. He toldSky Sports: “I’ve been
trying to become a number one for a
while and felt there was more opportunity
here. The figures don’t lie – there are
very few black managers [in England].”
Trabzonspor are currently serving
a one-year ban from Europe for FFP
breaches, so Newton will be able to fully
focus on domestic success in 2020-21.

The 20-year-old forward has been key
to Glimt’s flying start, scoring eight goals
and assisting six in his first12 games of
