Contributors

Emily Bazelon is a staff writer for the magazine
and the Truman Capote fellow for creative
writing and law at Yale Law School. This year,
her book ‘‘Charged’’ won The Los Angeles Times
Book Prize in the current-interest category
and a Silver Gavel Award from the American
Bar Association.

Nicole Chung is the author of a memoir, ‘‘All You
Can Ever Know.’’ Her writing has appeared in The
New York Times, The Guardian, GQ and Time,
among others.

Nikole Hannah-Jones is a staff writer for the
magazine. She is the creator of The 1619 Project,
which won the National Magazine Award
for public interest and the George Polk Special
Award this year; her essay about Black
Americans and democracy also won the Pulitzer
Prize for commentary.

Paul Tough is a contributing writer for the
magazine. His last article was adapted from
his latest book, ‘‘The Years That Matter Most:
How College Makes or Breaks Us.’’

Samantha M. Shapiro is a contributing writer
for the magazine, for which she has written
about Egyptian Facebook groups, a home-birth
commune in Tennessee and child preachers
in Brazil. Her work has also appeared in Foreign
Policy, ESPN the Magazine and Wired. For this
issue, she writes about childhood homelessness.
‘‘My son’s best friend became homeless in first
grade,’’ Shapiro says. ‘‘I hadn’t realized that
a majority of homeless New Yorkers are families
with children. We just don’t see them, because
they’re sleeping on someone’s couch or floor or
tucked away in unmarked buildings near storage
units and airports at the edges of the city.’’
