Brentford can go

one better this time

Title contenders
Brentford will be bruised by that defeat
against Fulham in last season’s play-off
final but Thomas Frank’s effervescence
and a sparkling new stadium will
ensure his squad are looking to the
future. The division’s player of the year,
Ollie Watkins, is a huge loss, and Said
Benrahma may still depart, but Ivan
Toney, a £10 million recruit from Peter-
borough, should flourish.
Watford have added Glenn Murray
to a forward line that already includes
Troy Deeney, Andre Gray, Danny Wel-
beck and Ismaïla Sarr. Vladimir Ivic,
Watford’s latest manager, arrives on the
back of success with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
After Norwich City’s exit from the
Premier League, Stuart Webber, the
sporting director, has so far kept hold of
key assets. The left back Jamal Lewis is
the only notable departure.

Play-off hopefuls
Bournemouth have lost Nathan Aké,
Aaron Ramsdale, Callum Wilson, the
captain Simon Francis and, of course,
their longstanding manager Eddie
Howe since relegation was confirmed.
Jason Tindall, Howe’s No 2, steps up
and has a squad capable of challenging.
Nottingham Forest somehow

contrived to throw away a place in the
play-offs on the final day and so Sabri
Lamouchi, the head coach, has added
Championship experience with Tyler
Blackett, Jack Colback, Luke Freeman
and Lyle Taylor joining.
The former Wigan Athletic striker
Kieffer Moore seems like a good fit for
Neil Harris’s Cardiff City, while their
Welsh rivals Swansea City have
snapped up Jamal Lowe from Wigan
but will be without Conor Gallagher
and Rhian Brewster, who, for now, have
returned to Chelsea and Liverpool re-
spectively.
Derby County have lost both full
backs to Sheffield United but have an
exciting crop of youngsters, and Wayne
Rooney orchestrating from the middle.

Relegation candidates
Sheffield Wednesday need to make
swift headway on their 12-point deduc-
tion and will hope that Josh Windass,
snaffled from Wigan, and Izzy Brown,
who joins on loan from Chelsea, can
replace the goals of Steven Fletcher,
who has joined Stoke City
Reading ushered Mark Bowen out
the door and replaced him with Veljko
Paunovic. Birmingham City have
turned to Aitor Karanka. The pair walk
into the most discombobulated clubs in
the Championship. Promoted teams
Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham
United meet at Adams Park today.

Watford’s winner was ‘Sunday league’

Watford
Cathcart 11 1

Middlesbrough

Jon West

0

Vladimir Ivic’s first game as Watford
manager was decided by a goal that
Neil Warnock was convinced
belonged in Sunday League football
rather than the Championship.
Craig Cathcart headed it home, in
the 11th minute from Ken Sema’s
cross, to allow Watford’s 12th
manager in eight years to start

dreaming that he might just also be
the luckiest.
Middlesbrough dominated for huge
spells in the second half with their
captain Britt Assombalonga a
constant menace, but Warnock’s side
could not find the net.
“It’s a good start, it’s a clean sheet
and we can be satisfied with the three
points,” Ivic said. “But we didn’t play
very well with the ball and we need to
work on this part of the game. We can
do much better.”
Warnock, 71, is in his 41st season as
a manager. His side were robust and
uncompromising and had the best of
the chances. “That’s football, isn’t it?”

Warnock said. “It’s disappointing to
lose a game where we had so many
good periods but it’s all about scoring.
“It was a Sunday league goal and I
don’t expect to concede them at any
stage of the season. You can’t say we
don’t practise enough. We have got to
get away from that — and make our
own free kicks more dangerous.”
Warnock was able to add Wigan
Athletics’s Egyptian midfielder Sam
Morsy to his squad before kick-off
and hopes to sign more new faces.
Former Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo,
a free agent after leaving Toulouse,
will not be one of them, however. “It’s
not going to be,” Warnock said.
