settles down into the

people power Liberty
Leading the People, and
explaining its power
and importance. HeIt is an interesting
theory, one that
cleverly reframes our
heated era of upheaval
in a far bigger context.
The Romantics were
rebels, and Schama is
soon linking the Doors
and l’imagination au
pouvoir (“all power to
the imagination”, a
slogan of the 1960s
counterculture) to the
work of William Blake.
And if it begins a bitand essentially says:
“Nothing new here.”
He argues that it was
all being done three
centuries ago when the
Romantics’ century-
long revolution in
thought and creativity
changed how we think
of our individuality,
and gave birth to the
collective sense that
passion should prevail
over logic in changing
