apparently at 33 hers

pregnancy”). Will she
really go back to her
daughter’s father, a
ruined former boy

gusto, her abrasive,
sardonic line of
humour most obviously
bringing to mind the
great sitcom
Catastrophe.

Moving beyond panel
shows and stand-up,
the comedian
Katherine Ryan gets
her own Netflix series.
She stars as Katherine,
a “fashionably
disruptive” single mum
in London. She’s also
fashionably frank and
foul-mouthed as she

through Géricault and
Friedrich, Chopin and
Schumann, Shelley and
Wordsworth, Mary
Wollstonecraft, Grimm
fairy tales and Robert
Burns. Throughout, he
connects their work
with today’s pop culture
and sensibilities to
demonstrate these
free-thinkers’ lasting
influence. Schama is
as erudite as ever.

like a film by Adam
Curtis — all cut-and-
paste montage of
populist rallies, football
crowds and Sigmund

settles down into the
more familiar Schama
territory: showing

Leading the People, and
explaining its power
and importance. He

It is an interesting
theory, one that
cleverly reframes our
heated era of upheaval
in a far bigger context.
The Romantics were
rebels, and Schama is
soon linking the Doors
and l’imagination au
pouvoir (“all power to
the imagination”, a
slogan of the 1960s
counterculture) to the
work of William Blake.
And if it begins a bit

and essentially says:
“Nothing new here.”
He argues that it was
all being done three
centuries ago when the
Romantics’ century-
long revolution in
thought and creativity
changed how we think
of our individuality,
and gave birth to the
collective sense that
passion should prevail
over logic in changing
the political landscape.
