TEARING IT ALL DOWN

RE “THE PLAGUE ELEC-

tion” [Aug. 17/Aug. 24]: Pan-
demic or not, the Trump base
is intent on bringing down
the system, which they see as
corrupt and elitist under the
liberal left, they of the deep
state. They did not benefi t
under Democratic presiden-
cies, so they might as well get
a wrecking ball of a President
to sink all and drown all.
Horng Ginn Wong,
SINGAPORE

WHAT TEMPERS TECHNOLOGY
RE “FEWER JOBS, MORE MA-
chines” [Aug. 17/Aug. 24]:
We must not fear technologi-
cal and scientifi c progress
or hold it back in any way.
History tells us that tech-
nological progress has cre-
ated more, not fewer, jobs,
albeit at higher skill levels.
Herein lies the secret: as so-
cieties advance technologi-
cally, they must also meet the
challenge of providing better
and broader education to all
levels of their respective so-
cieties, become more coop-
erative, more inclusive and
more sharing of the spoils of
progress. Unfortunately, so
far, too much of that progress
appears to get stuck on the
upper branches of the tree.

HOLDING WOMEN BACK
RE “AMERICA IS FAILING
Moms. Let’s Start Over”

[Aug. 17/Aug. 24]: How long
have I waited for someone
to point out the disparities
between what men can do
and what women have been
allowed to do. In her com-
mentary, Lyz Lenz lays it all
out in all its annoying com-
plexity. I was born in 1938
into a comfortable white cul-
ture that gave all its support
to boys and ignored girls,
who were expected to give
their parents grandchildren
and stick around to care for
aging parents. Somehow I
managed two degrees and
a professorship, all paid for
by scholarship and fellow-
ship. It is amazing that I ever
achieved anything with so
little support from family.
Anne M. Culver, DENVER

THE GLOOM THAT DOOMS
RE “A NEW GLOBAL DEPRES-
sion Is Coming” [Aug. 17/
Aug. 24]: Ian Bremmer’s pre-
dictions are as dangerous to
the economy as not wearing
a mask is to public health.
His idea that “what’s true in
the U.S. will be true every-
where else” is his most basic
mistake. Add over estimating
the role of China and under-
estimating Japan , confusing
COVID 19 and lockdown,
implicitly assuming that
Trump will be re-elected, and
ignoring the fact that the fu-
ture is far too complicated to
be predicted right now , and
not much is left of his two
pages of text. Investment

professionals know how a re-
cession ends: with the return
of confi dence. What Brem-
mer is doing is undermining
confi dence. This is not just
unnecessary, it is danger-
ous for the economy and the
unemployed.

WAKE UP TO THE TRUTH
RE “HOW TO SLEEP BETTER”
[Aug. 17/Aug. 24]: I’m 71 and
have a very eff ective sleep-in-
ducing method that requires
no drugs: I simply focus on
breathing into my belly. It’s
easy, can be done very re-
laxedly and works well. When
I do this, I’m almost unable to
think of other things.
Oscar Mann, NAIROBI

RE “SELLING SWEET
Dreams” [Aug. 17/Aug. 24]:
This whole article could have
been summed up in one sen-
tence: “I spent a lot of money

on various sleep remedies;
none of them really worked.”
As far as I can tell, when it
comes to fi nding better sleep,
it’s a matter of trial and error,
and we’re all on our own.
Brad Call,
STRASBURG, OHIO

IN DEFENSE OF GOOD COPS
RE “IT’S TIME TO RADICALLY
Rethink Public Safety in
America” [Aug. 17/Aug. 24]:
The idea shouldn’t be “de-
fund the police” but “redirect
the police.” Redirect funding,
but don’t leave the upstand-
ing offi cers behind. There is
a place for the ones who care
about the neighborhoods
they patrol.

AUSTIN
