EmmaCline’sslimnewstory
collection,“Daddy,” is likeanap-
pealing artisanal cocktail made
withCampari:The vibrantpre-
sentationmakes thebitter taste a
surprise.Somepeoplelovethat—
onefriend andfellowcriticsays
she’s gone
through four
bottles of Cam-
pariinquaran-
tine. So will she
likethe book?
Unlike me,she
says shedidn’t
loveCline’s de-
but,“TheGirls.”
Let us see ...
Overall,
“Daddy”has a
different feel
than Cline’s
best-selling
novel, thoughthere are certainly
connections; theseedyManson
character from thatbookcould
easily fitintothis galleryofunsa-
vory“daddies.”Two of the 10 sto-
riesdeal with the powerstructure
of femalefriendships, as does
“The Girls,” andCline again shows

her skillat evokingSouthern Cali-
fornia settings andatmosphere.
Thebig differenceisthat“The
Girls” lets youidentify withand
likethe main character.Mostof
the storiesin“Daddy,” seven previ-
ously published in theNew York-
er, Grantaor the Paris Review, do
not.
Six of the 10 focus on privileged
menin middleage.These charac-
ters, depictedthrough ayoung
female author’seyes, bring to
mind the sleazyrecord producer
LouKlinein Jennifer Egan’s “A
Visit From the Goon Squad”and
A.M. Homes’s RichardNovak in
“This BookWillSave Your Life,”
alsoboth Californians. Redemp-
tionfor such fellowsisnot impos-
sible, but it is rare, and Cline is not
inclinedtobelenient.
Theopening story, “WhatYou
CanDo WithaGeneral,”centers
onJohn,an olderdad whose rela-
tionships withhis adultchildren,
his ailing dog(Zero has recently
had an operation to insertapace-
maker) and his wife, Linda, are all
fairly tenuous, madepainfully
clear by afamily gathering at
Christmastime.Clineoften char-
acterizes(or makes fun of)people

in terms of their preferred enter-
tainment: Lindareads memoirs
bymothersofschool shooters and
agirl kidnapped andkept in a
backyard shedfor years.John pre-
ferstobesoothedbyendless epi-
sodesof aTVshowaboutapairof
older womenandtheir“mildtra-
vails”inabeach townhe takes to
be Santa Barbara, Calif.
We stay in John’s head,where
thingsare bleak.Hemuseson the
awfulnessof keeping his poordog
alive in “emotional servitude”to
the family, on his disappointment
in his children —“Howmuch bet-
ter offthey’dhavebeenin Ver-
montorNew Hampshireorone of
those states where the costofliv-
ingwascheap, where thekids
could have done4-Hand gone to
communitycollege ...”—onthe
“neuteringofhisanger.” He triesto
ginupsomegroupnostalgia with
homemovies, but nobodyhas re-
allyrecovered fromwhatthe read-
er starts to figureout wereabusive
incidentsin the family’s past.
“MenloPark” features Ben,a
disgracedformermagazineeditor,
travelingtomeetwithhis also-dis-
gracedtech-billionaire client,for
whomhe is to editamemoir,one

the client delusionally envisions
as a“hero’s journey.”The billion-
aire has an assistant whose
brusquetreatment of Benseems
to indicateshe knows his story.
Likeareformedsmoker whois
almostwaitingfor atragedy bad
enough tomakebummingaciga-
rette forgivable,Ben addsaridicu-
lousnew pagetothe catalogue of
things thatmakeyou feel so sorry
for yourselfyou can giveyour su-
peregothe dayoff.
In “Son of Friedman,” awashed-
up Hollywooddirector in his 70s
has invited his successful old
friend—once uponatime,their
wivesshoppedfor Oscar dresses
together—tothepremierescreen-
ing of his son’sfirstfilm,which
theyboth helped fund. It turnsout
to be “basically amusicvideoof
the Beatles’ greatesthits”inter-
spersed with interviews with
“what appearedto be manyad-
junctfacultymembers of Santa
MonicaCityCollege.”Italmost
seems crueltolaugh —manyof
Cline’sstoriesliveonthe edge of
that“almost.”
Thefemale protagonistsget a
better deal, and thefriendshipsto-
riesaremy twofavorites.“Marion”

firstbrought Clineinto thepublic
eye, winningthe PlimptonPrize
from theParisReviewin2014, the
sameyear she finished the manu-
script of her $2 million baby.Itis
the storyofan11-year-old anda
13-year-old running looseatthe
older girl’s parents’ ranchin the
hills,the teenager plunging down
everypossiblepath outofchild-
hood, her friend eager to follow.
“A/S/L” (this standsfor “age,
sex, location” andisused in sex-
oriented chatrooms) is setata
mellow luxury rehab, whereTho-
ra has beensentto keep her out of
saidchatrooms.Theresheandher
roommate,Ally, attempttocope
withthe exquisitelycurated bore-
dom.“Ally andThorawatched a
KenBurns documentaryabout
nationalparks. This alone seemed
to takeyears offtheirlives.”Then
G., adisgraced celebritychef,
showsup aboutthe same timeas a
litter of puppies. Finally,some
ways to getintrouble.
Celebrityagain plays arolein
“The Nanny,”whose protagonistis
hiding out fromthe aftermathof
herjob-endingaffairwithafa-
mousactor.Again,the of-the-mo-
mentsetup is intriguing,Cline’s

wit is on point andher writingis
evocativeand seductive.She ex-
celsatdescribingcolors: “The surf
postersoneverywall showed
men,pink-nippled andtan,on
boards in the middle of huge,al-
mosttranslucentwaves. Thepost-
ers werelike pornabout the color
blue.”
So, willmy Campari-swilling
friend like “Daddy”? Ithink it has
lessto do with whether she en-
joyed“The Girls”thanwithher
enthusiasm forstoriesabout un-
likable people.Icouldnot help
feeling discouraged by theau-
thor’s coldnesstowardher male
characters. Nonetheless, the book
is so well-written —not to men-
tionshort —and justelusive
enoughthatIfind myself wanting
to reread the stories, to think
aboutthem, to talk to someone
about them. So,Campari girl, the
answeris: Giveit ashot.
