Flights home from the NBA’s
bubble are planned whenever a
team is on the cusp of elimination,
just in case they’re needed.
Denver is in no hurry to board
that plane.
The never-say-die Nuggets
pulled off another season-saving
comeback — and after rallying
from 19 points down with 22 min-
utes remaining, they will see the
Los Angeles Clippers in Game 7 on
Tuesday night in Kissimmee, Fla.,
for a berth in the Western Confer-
ence finals.
Nikola Jokic had 34 points,
14 rebounds and seven assists, and
the Nuggets topped the Clippers,
111-98, on Sunday to even their
Western Conference semifinal se-
ries at three games apiece. The
Nuggets will try to become the
first team in NBA history to rally
from a pair of 3-1 deficits in the
same postseason after doing so
against Utah in the first round.
“I’m running out of adjectives,
superlatives, whatever you want
to call it to speak on our team,”
Nuggets Coach Michael Malone
said. “That is a tough, resilient
group of you-know-whats. I love
our team. I love our team. I love
our toughness.”
Jamal Murray scored 21 points
for Denver, which got 16 from Gary
Harris, 13 from Michael Porter Jr.
and 10 from Monte Morris. The
Nuggets outscored the Clippers
62-27 over a dizzying 20-minute
stretch of the second half, turning
everything around.
“I don’t know how we did it, to
be honest,” Jokic said. “That’s an
amazing team. They are really tal-
ented, well coached. They’re really
scary.”
Paul George had 33 points,
Kawhi Leonard scored 25 and Lou
Williams had 14 for the Clippers,
who are 0-7 in games in which they
could clinch a trip to the confer-
ence finals.
The Clippers were outscored by
29 after halftime, their worst such
deficit of the season.
“It’s frustrating,” Clippers
Coach Doc Rivers said. “Listen,
when you decide to be a coach it’s
not going to be roses every day. We
clearly have the right formula as
far as how we’re playing, and then
we keep losing it.”
The Nuggets were down 16 at
the half — the fourth time out of
six games in the series when they
trailed by at least that many in a
game — and eventually fell behind
by 19 in the third quarter.
“I just think we’re a really good
team,” Murray said. “It shouldn’t
get to this point.”
Of course, the Nuggets flourish
when they’re in trouble.
They saved their season in
Game 5 of the opening round by
rallying from 15 points down in
the third quarter against Utah to
set the tone for a rally from a 3-1
series deficit. They saved them-
selves again in Game 5 of this
series, falling behind by 16 before
coming back.
On Sunday, more of the same.
George hit a three-pointer
shortly after halftime for a
1 9-point lead, and Leonard made a
pair of free throws with 8:27 left in
the third quarter to put the Clip-
pers up 73-55. That’s apparently
when the Nuggets decided it was
time to get going.
Over the next 10 minutes, the
Nuggets outscored the Clippers
30-8. Denver had eight players
score in that stretch, with Murray
and Morris scoring seven apiece,
and the big deficit became an
8 5-81 lead with 10:16 left.
“It’s not that we don’t respect
them,” George said. “We respect
the opponent. They got this far for
a reason.”
“It’s going to sound weird or
funny or whatever, but we don’t
care,” Jokic said. “We’re just going
to go there and have fun.”

D’Antoni leaving Houston
Mike D’Antoni told the Hous-
ton Rockets that he will not be
back as their coach next season,
essentially choosing free agency
over a return to the club with
which he has spent the past four
seasons.
D’Antoni told the Rockets on
Sunday — not even a full day after
the team’s season ended with a
playoff loss to the Los Angeles
Lakers — that he would seek
coaching options elsewhere for
next season and not return to
Houston. Team owner Tilman Fer-
titta confirmed the move.
ESPN first reported the
6 9-year-old coach’s decision.

NUGGETS 111,
CLIPPERS 98

BY BEN GOLLIVER

kissimmee, fla. — A group of
more than two dozen people
stopped traffic near the front
entrance of the NBA’s bubble at
Disney World on Saturday night
to peacefully protest the police
shooting of Salaythis Melvin.
The late-night demonstration
held up multiple buses trans-
porting media members and
league staffers who were travel-
ing between Adventhealth Are-
na, where the Los Angeles Lakers
had just eliminated the Houston
Rockets from the playoffs, and

the Coronado Springs Resort
property, which has been home
to the NBA’s restart since early
July.
Melvin, 22, was shot and killed
Aug. 7 by an Orange County
sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot
of the Florida Mall in Orlando,
15 miles from the NBA bubble.
The Black Lives Matter pro-
testers walked into traffic and
approached the front of the me-
dia buses at the intersection of
Coronado Springs and Buena
Vista Drive, directly in front of
the main entrance to the Gran
Destino Tower. That Disney hotel
is the temporary home for the
Lakers and the NBA’s other re-
maining contenders, and the sur-
rounding property, which is
fenced off to the public, houses
staffers and media members.
The protesters chanted, “No
justice, no peace”; displayed

“Justice 4 Salaythis” signs; and
wore shirts that read, “Arrest the
deputy that killed Salaythis Mel-
vin.” They also appealed directly
to multiple NBA players: One
sign read, “LeBron, stand with
us,” while another included the
jersey numbers of James, Antho-
ny Davis, James Harden and
Russell Westbrook alongside the
words, “Orlando needs you.”
“We are here because Orange
County Sheriff’s Deputy James
Montiel shot and killed an inno-
cent black man at the Florida
Mall on August 7, 2020,” read one
banner held by three protesters.
The protesters refused to
move when one bus driver
inched forward and honked his
horn, but they eventually left the
roadway once local authorities
arrived.
The demonstration was the
first of its kind near the NBA’s

restricted bubble, where teams,
league officials and media mem-
bers have lived for more than two
months isolated from the rest of
the world so that games could
continue during the novel coro-
navirus pandemic.
NBA players have spent
months advocating on behalf of
social justice issues and partici-
pating in protests following the
police killings of George Floyd
and Breonna Taylor. Last month,
the Milwaukee Bucks decided
not to take the court in protest of
the police shooting of Jacob
Blake. Some players, including
Boston Celtics forward Jaylen
Brown, have expressed frustra-
tion that they cannot leave the
bubble to join the protests that
have continued across the coun-
try in recent months.
The NBA and the National
Basketball Players Association

took steps this summer on social
justice matters, including estab-
lishing a 10-year, $300 million
foundation for Black communi-
ties, affixing “Black Lives Mat-
ter” decals to the courts, adding
optional messages to players’
jerseys and pursuing voter edu-
cation and registration initia-
tives.
Adventhealth Arena and the
Coronado Springs Resort are
protected and monitored by nu-
merous layers of security, includ-
ing 24-hour video surveillance,
NBA security, Disney security
officers, local police and Osceola
County sheriff’s deputies. Earlier
in the week, Houston Rockets
forward Danuel House left the
bubble after an NBA security
investigation concluded he host-
ed an unauthorized guest in his
hotel room.
