Muslim girl from a devout background whojoins
an all-girls dance group recently became thecenter
of controversy when a poster seemed tosexualize
its very young characters. But the movie itselfis not
ex ploitative in the least. It would have been easyfor
Doucouré to use a broad brush to paintthe
extremes of her protagonist’s experience (“stifling
tradition bad, dancing good”), but Cuties isnota
blunt screed or a finger-wagging cautionarytale.
The director seems far too sensitive for that kindof
polemic. Her film is subtle, complex, and honest.
