hose persons who have

been exposed to the sun’s

rays during the recent

hot weather have found

its effects very trying,”

wrote a correspondent to The Times.

“Pavements and buildings have been

greatly heated up, and it has been

difficult to find a cool place. Most

people have walked on the shady

side of the road whenever it has

been possible.”

That sounds like the present hot

spell, but it was a letter published in

The Times on September 9, 1911,

and it came during a remarkable

heatwave, which reached a

high of 34.6C at Raunds in

Northamptonshire on September 8.

It followed a hot, dry summer that

began in May. Blackpool, Brighton

and other seaside resorts reported a

huge rise in visitors and The

Spectator complained of people

bathing in the Serpentine in Hyde

Park “at unwonted hours”, which

“would probably see the practice of

mixed bathing imported from the

coast to our metropolitan waters”.

The heat and drought led to

severe problems. Water supplies

were cut off for several hours each

day in cities including Manchester

and Bradford, and factory and mill

workers were laid off because of the

water shortages or worked restricted

hours to avoid the heat of the day.

Vegetable crops withered in fields.

The death rate steadily increased

through the summer and in July The

Times began a regular column

“Deaths from Heat”. In London

alone there were an estimated 4,100

excess deaths during July, August

and September compared with the

same period in 1910. A large number

of deaths were caused by food and

milk that had spoilt in the heat. The

heatwave finally ended on

September 12, with wind and rain.

If that summer was so hot, surely

it disproves that climate change is

happening in recent times? A big

difference is that high temperatures

are now happening more often and

records are broken more regularly.

The Met Office’s State of the UK

Climate report last year showed that

the ten warmest years since 1884

have all occurred since 2002.
