Martyn Ziegler Chief Sports Reporter

Jofra Archer has said that Michael
Holding should have done more
research before dishing out “harsh”
criticism of the England team’s decision
to stop taking a knee before matches.
The England fast bowler hit back at
the West Indies great, who last week
described the reasons given by England
and Australia for not taking a knee in
support of Black Lives Matter as
“feeble” and “lame”.
Archer, 25, who helped England to
square the three-match one-day series
against Australia on Sunday night,
defended his side’s stance.
“No one here has forgotten about
Black Lives Matter,” he said. “I’ve
spoken to Tom Harrison [the ECB chief
executive] and we have got stuff
running in the background. I’m pretty
sure Michael Holding doesn’t know

The number of fans allowed into
sporting events after October 1 may be
restricted to between 1,000 and 2,500 if
the government decides the coronavi-
rus infection rate is too high to allow
stadiums to be up to one-third full.
Senior figures in football have told

opposed by Premier League clubs, who
claim that safe measures are already in
place for a larger-scale return of fans.
The option is one of several set to be
discussed this week at a meeting of
sports leaders with Oliver Dowden, the
secretary of state for digital, culture,
media and sport. Allowing a
further-reduced number of spectators

Chelsea era

James celebrates his second-half strike from 30 yards against Brighton last night, a goal that got Lampard, inset, and his new-look Chelsea side off to a winning start

Frank Lampard insists that
Chelsea’s under-pressure
goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga
has his backing despite
another blunder last night.
Arrizabalaga, 25, let
Leandro Trossard’s 54th-
minute equaliser for
Brighton & Hove Albion
slip underneath his
outstretched arms after
Jorginho’s first-half
penalty. But 100 seconds
later a magnificent 30-yard
goal from the defender Reece
James restored Chelsea’s lead.
Kurt Zouma scored the third to
ensure three points.
Despite looking for a new
goalkeeper this summer, with
Rennes’ Édouard Mendy expected
to join, Lampard said he was
pleased with Arrizabalaga.
“I’m very happy with Kepa
today,” the Chelsea head coach
