mucking around,
speaks convincingly of
real, lived experiences.
Despite the censorship
and tyranny of the
authorities there is also
a lot of footage from
within Nazi Germany.
It continues on
Wednesday and
Thursday with editions
devoted to two groups
that traditionally
come first — women
and children.

Shooting the War
PBS America, 7.20pm

This three-part series
comprises amateur
movie footage taken by
ordinary people during
the Second World War.
In tonight’s first
episode, entitled Men,

episodes, called

where he sobs and lets
a small T-shirt of a
child float downstream.
Walking back to his
car, he becomes
alarmed at the sight of
a young girl called
Epona trying to kill
herself, seemingly with
the help of a small boy.
No further spoilers
except to say that the
rest of the action takes
place on the island of

and loss are its abiding
themes even if the
exact narrative strands
are harder to decipher.
We open the action
with garden centre
owner Sam (Jude Law,
yes really), who is on
a lonely road speaking
animatedly to his wife.
He seems to have
mislaid £40,000 in a
shady enterprise and is
wary of a man who may
harm him. We then
