discussions at conferences. I owe a particularly large debt of thanks to three of
those people who also acted as reviewers for the press – Stephen Davies, James
Hamilton, and Andrew Kania. Each read an entire draft of the manuscript and
provided me with a wealth of critical comments and suggestions that made
the process of revision both stimulating and productive. This book would have
been much poorer without their input, although responsibility for the flaws
that remain is of course entirely my own. I would also like to acknowledge the
continuing support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada whose funding has been of great help in the research for and writing of
this book. Finally I would like to thank my partner Ann for her love, tolerance,
and support over the past two summers when I worked on this book while
more traditional summertime activities beckoned!
