ADVICE

Use a separate ball of yarn for
each colour section on your row.
You may find it helps to wind your
yarn into smaller bobbins to help
manage the number of yarns.
Keep them wound as close to the
fabric as possible to stop them
getting tangled. When you reach
a colour change, twist the strands
of yarn together to avoid a hole.

COLOUR CHART

PICKING UP
STITCHES
Knitted stitches
are wider than they are
tall so pick up and knit
two stitches every three
rows. This will prevent
the fabric from being
distorted. To pick up and
knit, start at the top
left-hand edge or bottom
right-hand edge and
insert your needle between
the first and second
stitches. Wrap the yarn
around the needle as if
to knit it and pull the
loop through the fabric
leaving it on the needle.
Continue until all your
stitches are picked up.

TIP!

CIRCULAR
NEEDLES
As you have a
lot of stitches, you might
find it helps to use
circular knitting needles
to take the weight of the
blanket. Cast your
stitches onto one needle
tip, but don’t join in the
round, just knit back and
forth in rows.

TIP!

JOINING YARN
To join in a
yarn mid-way
through the row, insert
your needle onto the next
stitch and use the new
shade to complete the
stitch, leaving a long
tail for weaving in later.
On following rows, you’ll
be using the intarsia
method (see panel, left)
and will need to twist
the old and new yarns
together to avoid holes.

TIP!

CHANGING
COLOURS
To join a new
yarn at the start of a
row, cut the first yarn
leaving a long tail, then
insert your needle into
the first stitch of the
row. Leaving a long tail,
wrap the new colour
around the needle and
pull it through the first
stitch. You may want to
knot the two yarn tails
for added security but
you can undo these later
before weaving in
the ends.
