52 Assignments – Nature

Photography by Ross

Hoddinott and Ben Hall
Ammonite Press, £12.99, 128 pages,
hardcover, ISBN: 978-

Small enough to t neatly in your
camera bag, the latest book in the 52
Assignments series is brought to you
from nature big-hitters Ross Hoddinott
and Ben Hall. It gives you a year’s worth
of weekly commissions and concepts for
composing and creating eye-catching nature
photography in all its forms. Whether its building a
blind, setting up a feeding station, shooting macro
masterpieces, creating beautiful animal silhouettes,
capturing birds in ight or focusing on natural
textures, all the assignments have been written to
inspire you to be more creative and explore the
natural world around you. If you’re keen to expand
your nature photography repertoire, or fancy the idea
of weekly challenges, this book comes highly
recommended – and at the price it’s quite a bargain.

Oli Kellett – Fellow Humans
10 September to 31 October 2020. Monday
to Friday by appointment, Saturday 10am-
2pm. HackelBury Fine Art, London W

This exhibition focuses on the photographer’s
ongoing series ‘Cross Road Blues’, made up of
large-scale photographs taken at crossroads in cities
across North and South America. Kellett generally
walks the streets for days before setting up his
large-format camera and waiting to capture
moments. The way the buildings frame his images
and his focus on the light creates a cinematic quality
reminiscent of great American painters such as
Edward Hopper. Although not taken during lockdown,
the empty streets and melancholy gures feel like
they speak to the experiences we’ve all been going
through recently too. Note – in order to maintain
social distancing, it’s recommended that you book an
appointment ahead of time.
