LETTER OF THE WEEK

AP still stands head and
shoulders above the
competition.
Pete Jeans

No other photo magazine
publishes as much
content about low-cost
photography on a budget
as we do. We have just
published our annual
Second-hand Special
issue, but virtually every
week we also run tests
and features on used
bargains, old lm
cameras, budget Chinese
lenses and accessories,
etc. But at the same time
it is part of our remit to
review new cameras and
products and it is not for
us to decide whether our
readers can or cannot
afford them. It would be
wrong to assume that
everyone who reads AP is
of ‘limited means’, as our
recent reader survey
showed.

Chew on this
It was very good to open
AP 15 August and see
somewhere literally just
down the road from where
I live! However, while the
Round House is on the
edge of the village of
Stanton Drew in the Chew
Valley, it is not on the
Mendip Hills; they are
some way off to the south.
I also take my hat off to
Martin Waters for having
the courage to stand in

House that featured in AP

Shoot widescreen
Lockdown has provided
some fresh thinking time,
with the result that I’ve
now taken to the 16x
framing format, especially
as my photography usually
ends up in photo books. A
double-page spread gives
an ideal setting for this
format. You might lose
some pixels because of
the shallower depth than,
say, the standard 4x3 but
so far the results have
been more than
satisfactory. Not every
picture opportunity is right
for this switch, of course,
but looking at scenes with
fresh eyes has brought a

different and very useful
slant.

Pie in the sky
With regard to your
8 August issue I feel that
you must have a very
uncritical view of price
in ation, and a very
optimistic view of the
 nancial resources of your
readers which could be
interpreted as rather
patronising in these times
of furlough and rising
unemployment.
Firstly you feature two
new cameras – a rst look
of the Sony Alpha 7S III
and a review of the Leica

M10-R – which cost
£3,800 and £7,
respectively (body only).
Then there is the new
CFexpress Type A memory
card for £210 or £400,
and two sets of lters
costing £229 (Cokin) and
£220 or £395 (Kase
Wolverine), with a simple
Adapter Ring (Cokin)
costing £38. This is
pie-in-the-sky country for
all of us on limited
means. I think you should
widen your appeal to all
photographers, not just
the wealthy few. I know
this sounds critical (which
it is) but take some solace
in the fact that I feel that
