Mad for Mod

Called “the decorating style
that won’t die” by The New
Yo r k T i m e s , midcentury
modern design has enjoyed a
surge in popularity over the
past two decades. What is it
about this look, which dates
back to the 1940s, that has
so many devoted followers?
Many buyers are drawn
to the style’s simple shapes,
wood detailing, and timeless
aesthetic. Here are some
other elements that help a
house give off a mid-mod vibe:
Minimalist detailing. Clean lines outside and inside the home give off a retro sensibility. Material choices.
A combination of manmade
and natural materials are
important to this style.
Flat planes. Bold geometric lines and gabled roofs are hallmarks. Large windows. Sliding-
glass doors and expansive
glazing help flood interiors
with natural light. These
are often set off with large
exterior overhangs.
Elevation changes. Split-level spaces, partial walls, and cabinets of varying heights create different depths in the floor plan. Integration with nature.
Multiple outdoor views
throughout a home provide
residents with a feeling of
being surrounded by nature.
