DUALSENSE
MARVEL’S
SPIDER-MAN:
MILES MORALES
Combat is the focus of this
web-swinging launch title,
and Insomniac Games is
giving us a taste of how
we’ll use the DualSense in Marvel’s
Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It slides us
into Miles’ spandex, allowing us to feel
what’s it’s like to be an electrically-
charged wall-crawling superhero.
Insomniac reveals that when you hold
down r to use Miles’ Venom Blasts in a
fight, you’ll feel a crackling sensation on
the left side of the controller as it builds
up, which then shifts to the controller’s
right side when you release it.
The team tease something similar for
Miles’ stealth ability, as well as confirming
you’ll be able to tell where attacks are
coming from as enemies swarm Miles
through the haptic feedback. “Because of
the high resolution of DualSense wireless
controller’s haptics system, we can really
push the dimensionality of the feedback,”
says creative director Brian Horton.

SACKBOY: A BIG
ADVENTURE
Sumo Digital’s Ned
Waterhouse says the
DualSense will allow you to
feel what Sackboy feels. He
mentions a “weapon mode”
on i that will allow the
adaptive triggers to offer
feedback when Sackboy
uses a grappling hook,
and also convey a sense of
tension when he’s carrying
an object around the stage.
GODFALL
Check OPM #179 for our
deep dive into how Godfall
uses the DualSense
controller. Counterplay
Games’ Keith Lee says you
can tell weapons apart by
feel rather than having to
look at the UI, and, similar
to Marvel’s Spider-Man:
Miles Morales, you can use
haptic feedback to sense
where enemies are in
relation to you.
HORIZON FORBIDDEN
WEST
While the development
team hasn’t said much
about the bow yet (despite
a bow and arrow’s use of
adaptive triggers being a
focal point of PS5’s first
official advertisement),
Guerilla has teased plenty
of new weapons for her
to use in this sequel, and
the adaptive triggers will
ensure each feels unique.
DEATHLOOP
As Deathloop’s an FPS,
guns play a big role in the
action, and that’s where
the DualSense helps to
bring everything to life. It’ll
make different guns feel
distinct from one another,
and provide additional
feedback – for example, by
locking up if your current
weapon jams, so you know
you have to do something
about it, and quickly.
QUANTUM ERROR
TeamKill Media has big
ideas for its sci-fi horror in
which you play a fireman.
The DualSense will deliver
everything from gunshot
vibration to different haptic
feedback depending on how
an enemy hurts you. Plus,
the studio is experimenting
with enabling you to discern
whether a door could result
in a backdraught by feeling
it with the controller.
RATCHET &
CLANK:
RIFT APART
Shooting of a less
magical but equally
explosive kind is central
to the return of Ratchet
and Clank in the descriptively
pun-tacular Ratchet & Clank: Rift
Apart. The duo are debuting on PS5
with a massive arsenal of wild and
inventive weaponry, and the way
you interact with those guns is now
more personal than ever.
Talking about how Insomniac
Games is utilising the adaptive
triggers for this chaotic platform-
shooter, creative director Marcus
Smith shares: “The Enforcer is
a dual-barrelled shotgun-type
weapon. As you pull the trigger,
you’ll fire from one barrel, and you
can feel resistance around halfway
down the trigger. Need a bigger
blast? Pull the trigger through that
resistance point and you’ll fire both
barrels at the same time.”
