ure, it’s not a
brand new Splinter
Cell, but Sam
Fisher’s recent
inclusion as a
crossover Operator in Tom
Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
was a great outing for the
grizzled spy (he’s now
pushing into his 60s).
Fisher joined the squad
under the codename Zero as
Rainbow Operation Staff,
packing the powerful
SC3000K assault rifle. His
gadget added a distinctly

spy-tinged twist, as he’s
capable of shooting four
spy cameras that can drill
through walls, stick to them,
and fire a shock dart. Fisher
can aid with map knowledge,
and respond to upcoming
defender team traps.
He was joined by a
reworking of the Chalet map,
which felt tighter than the

original. Operation Shadow
Legacy also introduced Ping
2.0, adding number coding
and contextual pings. The
update introduced many
other solid quality-of-life
improvements, Ubisoft
shoring up Rainbow Six Siege
for a new generation of
players. With Fisher on
board, you can’t go wrong.

FORTNITE – NEXUS WAR
While we waited for Marvel’s
Avengers to launch, Fortnite swept
in a week ahead of it to feed our
hunger for all things superheroic.
The Island collided with the
Marvelverse, falling under threat
of Galactus. Cue Marvel-inspired
locations, Stark weaponry, and
a deluge of superpowers to use.
Completing special hero and villain
challenges allowed us to collect
outfits based on our favourites,
such as Storm, Iron Man and Thor.
Wolverine was toughest to earn.

THE ELDER SCROLLS
ONLINE – STONETHORN
The Dark Heart Of Skyrim storyline
got its penultimate update in the
form of Stonethorn, a double dose
of four-player dungeoning for ESO
Plus members (also purchasable
from the Crown Store). We dove into
Castle Thorn to take on Lady Thorn
and the vampire army she’s been
building, and went head-to-head with
alchemist Arkasis’ monstrosities
in Blackreach’s Stone Garden. For
entering both we got the Energetic
Dwarven Shock-Spider pet.

FINAL FANTASY XIV –
GATHER ONE, GATHER
ALL!
Mixed media franchise Yo-kai Watch
returned to Eorzea in this frankly
massive crossover. Obtaining our
own Yo-kai Watch from a chap in
Ul’dah, we had to track down the
cute folkloric creatures, earning
up to 17 of them as Minions (and
weapon variants). Little Noko was
just adorable. Plus, the Whisper-Go
mount came back, allowing us to
ghost ride the... er... ghost.

Sam Fisher comes

out of retirement

Online games can feel like
communities, and there’s
nothing that makes you feel
more in tune with one than
when you all come together
over something special.
Take Call Of Duty:
Warzone’s reveal of Black
Ops – Cold War...

It’s debatable
when these
first online
events started, though
Fortnite has made it
mainstream – remember
when Fortnite’s Chapter 1
ended and the game voided
out of existence for a while?
Warzone,
Activision’s
COD-brand
battle royale, has become
a must-play for fans.
Having everyone together,
constantly playing online,
allowed the publisher to have
fun with the reveal. Players
had to collect map codes to
find redacted information,
while video footage from the
Cold War teaser played over
the screen, getting more
over-the-top as they
progressed and culminating
in a full trailer once they
reached the stadium.
Involving fans directly
with the reveal is the kind
of thing only a series like
Call Of Duty, which has a
series of main games beside
Warzone, could do. Single-
player isn’t going the way
of the dodo, but coming
together online to share
excitement for its reveal
adds to the experience.

SAM FLIXER
Rainbow Six Siege isn’t the only place
Sam Fisher is splintering off into. Netflix
has also commissioned an animated
series from Derek Kolstad, the writer of
John Wick. It makes sense, as Fisher is
also an unstoppable force.
