A-maze-ing story

Facing a real bully in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Celebrating PlayStation’s finest moments

W

hen you land on Krete,
a man promises to
allow you to fight
the minotaur in
combat if first you prove yourself
at some comically low-budget
tasks. Venturing into its lair, you
discover it’s that very same man
in a mediocre disguise. It’s one of
those great moments of genuine
humour and charm. Perhaps the
truth behind those myths was just
simple con-artistry and a desire to
believe in mythology after all?
Well, think again. Not too far
from the fake cave lie the ruins of
Knossos Palace. A young boy who’s

looking for his vanished father
leads you deep below the rubble
to a strange and otherworldly
gate that blocks the entrance to
the labyrinth. After collecting keys
from across the island you return
to open the way forward, and are
plunged into a truly oppressive
maze peppered with pitfalls, having
to follow a thread through to find
your way. It’s an environment
tinged with dread that feels alien in
a way previous areas haven’t, and
it’s truly unsettling compared to
the generic caves of the fake lair.
At the end of the maze, of
course, waits the creature you’ve

been seeking. Like no enemy you’ve
faced before, the minotaur is
exactly as you’d expect: hulking,
dangerous, and a lot harder to
handle than any bears you’ve
encountered in the mountains. You
need to change your approach to
best him in combat, and be more
cautious. Steer clear of his axe and
watch out for his ground pound.
It feels like a real boss battle, as
this strange creature is a match
for your super-powered Misthios.
What’s more, if this legend is real,
it makes others possible too –
hidden truths that Odyssey slowly
reveals from this point on. Q
