NASHVILLE: VERIZON WIRELESS
Verizon doesn’t have 5G in Nashville, but it doesn’t matter: The carrier’s 4G
network beat both of the others’ 4G/5G networks in the Music City, although it
was a little bit less reliable than AT&T’s 4G network on downloads.
AT&T and T-Mobile both have some 5G coverage in the Nashville metro area. I
saw the same trends I saw in many other cities: When the AT&T phone dropped
into 5G, speeds actually went down because it may have abandoned some of the
wider 4G channels, while T-Mobile’s 5G device was about 2 percent faster than
its 4G device at locations with both networks.
This all cements the fact that 5G doesn’t mean much without dedicated
airwaves that have wider bandwidth than 4G channels, which neither AT&T nor
T-Mobile appear to have in Nashville. Without that, 5G is just an icon in your
status bar.
Verizon had strong speeds citywide, while T-Mobile performed the best near
dense attractions such as downtown and Opry Mills. In Franklin, Verizon
