Tamara Hinson suggests some sun-drenched destinations
for travellers craving winter sun

Travel to some of the most popular sun-
soaked destinations was sadly out of the
question in early summer, but the travel
industry’s speedy recovery is great news for
those seeking some winter sun.
Those looking for a short-haul getaway
should consider Crete, more specifically
the Abaton Island Resort & Spa, near
Hersonissos (from £220 per night,
abaton.gr). The glass-clear water is perfect
for snorkellers, who can explore newly
created snorkelling trails designed by a team
of marine biologists keen to give visitors a
glimpse of Hersonissos’s weird and
wonderful underwater species.
If you’re a foodie fanatic, consider
Marbella. Yes, you did read that correctly – it
turns out there’s more to Marbs than foam
parties and champagne-sessions, after all.
The Puente Romano Beach Resort (from
£315 per night, puenteromano.com) has
created a brilliant range of expert-led
activities to provide visitors with an insight
into the area. Our favourite activities?
A gazpacho-making masterclass and a
cheese-making session with a local farmer.
Another brilliant destination for sun-
seekers is Cyprus. Visit in September,
October and November for wall-to-wall blue

skies and fewer crowds. We suggest making
a beeline for the Troodos Mountains for
long-distance hikes along the area’s ancient
donkey trails. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views
of the Med, and can finish the day at one of
the vineyards in the mountains’ foothills –
this is where locals make Commandaria, a
sweet wine that was drunk by guests at the
wedding of Richard the Lionheart in 1191.
(sunvil.co.uk offers a seven-night package,
staying at the Casale Panayiotis and
including flights and car hire, for £859pp.)
If you’re looking for a long-haul getaway,
Mauritius is a fantastic option for some
winter sun – a beach-fringed paradise with
plenty to offer adrenaline junkies, whether
it’s fantastic scuba diving or long hikes
through the wildlife-filled Black River Gorges
National Park. The island also has some of
the Indian Ocean’s best hotels, including the
Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas (from
£150 per night, anantara.com), which
reopens this September. It’s Mauritius’s
newest resort and you’ll find it on the
beautiful Le Chaland Beach, in the south.
This is one of Mauritius’s quieter, more
remote areas; base yourself here and you’ll
have easy access to the Ile aux Aigrettes
nature reserve and the Blue Bay Marine Park.

REIMA XYLITOL COOL
KIDS’ T-SHIRT
These ingenious children’s
T-shirts are treated with
Xylitol Cool – a finish which
gives the material a cooling
effect during periods of
physical activity. They’re
moisture-wicking and quick-
drying too.
£20.60, reima.com

FATBOY MIASUN
BEACH TENT
Heading to the beach but
keen to avoid the lobster
look? Ditch unwieldy parasols
and slip this ingenious beach
tent into your bag, instead.
There’s room for two adults
and two children under this
crafty lightweight canopy,
which weighs just 1.2kg and
folds up into an A4 envelope-
sized pouch.
£99, madeindesign.co.uk

HUMI
Say hello to the Humi – a
compact fan that is ideal for
holidays. It’s ultra-quiet
and also works as a heater,
humidifier and hand warmer,
making it ideal for the odd
inevitable cold-weather day.
