Autumn, season of mists and mellow

fruitfulness, and also some cool new

on-demand telly things coming out

Rebecca
Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic
novel gets an all-new adaptation
courtesy of Netflix and High-Rise
director Ben Wheatley. A naive
young woman finds herself on
unfamiliar ground after marrying
a wealthy older man and realising
his first wife still exerts a powerful
presence – despite being dead. Lily
James and Armie Hammer star.
Film / Netflix, 21 Oct

The Walking Dead:
World Beyond
You’re probably sick of zombies by
now. Shambling brain-chompers
have invaded pretty much every
aspect of pop culture, so do we
really need another TV show about
them? Amazon clearly thinks
so: this is its new Walking Dead
spin-off series, and it’s clearly
aimed at a teen audience.
S1 / Amazon Prime Video, 2 Oct

The Right Stuff
This new adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s
tome about the early years of the
US space programme was made by
Disney in partnership with National
Geographic. Looking at how NASA
recruited the country’s best test
pilots and turned them into the first
astronauts, it promises to be an
inspirational examination of human
endeavour. With cool rockets!
S1 / Disney+, 9 Oct

Star Trek: Discovery
Discovery’s fast-paced format,
cuss-laden dialogue and apparent
lack of respect for ‘Star Trek norms’
(whatever those are) don’t sit well
with some, but we’ve always found
it refreshing. The first two seasons
were set prior to the original Star
Tre k series, but the timeline has now
shifted completely, giving this show
licence to boldly go... well, anywhere.
S3 / Netflix, 16 Oct

The Haunting
of Bly Manor

Potentially the perfect series to lead
you into Halloween, this spin-off
from The Haunting of Hill House
shares much of that spooky show’s
artistic DNA. Creator Mike Flanagan
and some cast members return,
but the setting is all new. It’s loosely
based on the chilling Henry James
novella The Turn of the Screw.
S1 / Netflix, 9 Oct

The Undoing

This miniseries stars Nicole Kidman
as a hotshot New York therapist
whose perfect life is shattered
by a terrifying event. Originally
scheduled for the spring but
delayed due to the pandemic,
The Undoing’s dark psychological
thriller vibes actually make it seem
better suited to the dark autumn
nights. Hugh Grant also stars.
S1 / Now TV / Sky Atlantic, 26 Oct

Brave New World S1 / Now TV / Sky One, 2 Oct

In a future world where privacy, money, monogamy, family and the study of history
have been abolished, peace and harmony apparently reign – but scratch the surface
of this utopia and things start to look a lot less rosy and a lot more sinister. Legendary
British comicbook writer Grant Morrison is among the creators of this adaptation of
Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking sci-fi novel. It looks to have taken lots of liberties with
the book, but expect some sharp parallels with our current connected world.
