On one hand, Codemasters has
its realistic racing sims like F1;
on the other, it’s up for more of
a laugh. Going off-road with a
soundtrack of festival-friendly
bangers from the likes of the
Prodigy and Stormzy, Dirt 5
straps in for the latter.
It’s a vibrant globe-trotting
affair as you race in locations like
Arizona, Brazil, Morocco, China,
Italy, New York and Norway,
each with its own climate and
terrain to navigate – whether
you’re driving rally cars, buggies
or Stadium Super Trucks.
There’s even a career modefeaturing the voices of Nolan
North (Uncharted) and Troy
Baker (The Last of Us).
But where Dirt 5 gets more
playful is in a brand new mode,
fittingly titled Playgrounds.
Basically, you can create your
own crazy courses then upload
them for everyone else to take
on. Those who just want to play
can browse the following three
categories: Gymkhana, Smash
Attack and Gate Crasher.
Gymkhana is a freestyle mode
that’s been around since Dirt 3,
and is all about racking up a high
score performing tricks andstunts with whatever ramps and
obstacles you have on the track.
Giving the design to the players
is sure to mean some pretty
insane action here.
Smash Attack involves
collecting items to earn a set
score (we tried a circuit designed
like a cheeky Pac-Man tribute).
Gate Crasher is probably the
most conventional event type,
as you’re essentially designing
a track where the gates are
checkpoints. Of course, you
can also build ridiculously steep
ramps, huge chasms and rings of
