Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 14 words, average;
19, good; 25, very good; 31, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

The semi-finals of the 2020
Zimmermann Cup at the European
Winter Games featured four power-
ful teams, each with at least two
world champions. This was the cru-
cial deal in Russia v Gupta.
East’s double of 6♣ said, “Please
lead a spade, partner.” We st ,
Debbie Rosenberg of California,
replied, “Shan’t.” She led a trump.
The Russian declarer played low
from dummy and beat East’s
queen with the king. He crossed to
the king of diamonds, returned to
his ace, and ruffed his jack of dia-
monds (with the ace). At trick five,
he led a spade from dummy.
East, Naren Gupta, rose sharply
with the ace and led a fourth dia-
mond. Whether or not declarer
ruffed high, West’s eight of clubs
was promoted. One down.
It was a great trump lead by
Rosenberg. I’m betting declarer
would have made 6♣ if West had
obediently led a spade. East wins
the ace and (say) returns a (low)

y

spade. Declarer wins the king and
may cross to the ace of clubs
(felling the queen) and return to

yy

his♣KJ10, throwing hearts from
dummy. He has three red-suit
entries to dummy, two to ruff the
third and fourth spades and one to
enjoy the fifth. Slam made.
Perhaps declarer should have
made 6♣ on a trump lead too.
West would hardly lead from the
queen, so one option is to win the
first club with dummy’s ace (felling
East’s queen). He can now ruff a

y

diamond (low) and lead up a
spade, still holding♣KJ 1 09 to pre-
vent the trump promotion.
Alternatively, declarer can win

the club in hand, then cross to the
ace of clubs to lead up a spade.
East wins the ace and switches to a
diamond (best) but declarer wins
the ace, draws trumps, cashes the
king of spades and has the entries
to set up and enjoy dummy’s fifth

( 1 ) North-South were playing “Two-over-One”

(2) I must say I’d have bid 2NT. In Acol,

has to choose between 3 ♦ fourth suit forc-

(6) A tad optimistic, as North’s hand has
declined facing a doubleton spade.
(7) Asking for a spade lead, dummy’s first
