Synoptic situation

A breezy northeasterly fl ow will
bring a few scattered showers
to eastern and central areas,
particularly likely around the
coasts. Elsewhere, any showers
will ease to leave a largely dry
day with sunny spells as high
pressure builds in from the
north. A northeasterly fl ow
tomorrow will continue to bring
a few light showers to the east,
but elsewhere largely sunny.

A

monster is emerging
from the depths of the
Pacific and its mighty
strength will be felt
around the world. This is
La Niña, when the seas of the
Pacific around the equator turn
cooler towards South America and
warmer towards Indonesia and
Australia. It is the ugly sister of the
better known El Niño phenomenon,
and although the change in sea
temperatures during La Niña are
not as extreme, its impact can be
profound.
During La Niña, rainfall increases
in Indonesia and eastern parts of
Australia and carries the risk of
serious flooding. On the other side
of the Pacific, in California and
western parts of Latin America,
the threat is from lack of rain
and drought.
This may seem too remote to
worry about in Britain and the rest
of Europe, but La Niña can have an
effect on the jet stream, which
delivers much of our weather.
“For us in the UK, La Niña tends
to be associated with a cold start
and a mild end to the winter,” said
Adam Scaife, head of long-range
prediction at the Met Office. “While
we expect to see cold snaps,
particularly at the start of the
coming winter, it’s very unlikely to
be as cold as 2010.”
Indeed, the start of winter that
year was horrendously cold. From
late November and throughout
December Britain was plunged into
an Arctic freeze, the coldest
December since 1890 and the
coldest for any month since
February 1986. That period of La
Niña was one of the strongest on
record, when sea surface
temperatures were up to 2C
cooler than average. The present
La Niña is forecast to be about 1C
cooler than usual.
Other factors such as winds in the
stratosphere over the equator are
also expected to moderate the cool
start to winter. Even though La Niña
can turn early winter cool, by late
winter it can drive the jet stream
northwards, turning the weather
in Britain milder, but stormier
and wetter.
