Premiership Rugby is engaged in fresh

controversy after the BBC was forced to

cancel advanced plans to broadcast the

Gallagher Premiership final between

Exeter Chiefs and Wasps on October

  1. The BBC was approached in mid-

September by Darren Childs, chief

executive of Premiership Rugby (PRL),

about simulcasting the final live with

BT Sport and bringing the showpiece
event to a wider audience.
PRL maintains they were only
“exploratory” talks but the BBC was
under the impression it would be
broadcasting the game and cleared
space for it on BBC Two. The broad-
caster had arranged production logis-
tics, secured a studio and booked a
commentary team, with two former
England internationals as pundits.

Milton Keynes English Open.

play a pivotal role in Bristol’s qualification for the final. He is among a number of hopefuls vying to be England’s scrum half

That Tyrrell Hatton’s hoodie
prompted almost as much debate as
the golf in last week’s BMW PGA
Championship at Wentworth was
faintly embarrassing for a sport that
still struggles to shake off its outdated
and unwelcoming image.
The 29-year-old Englishman won
the European Tour’s showpiece event
by four shots and showed once again
that he has all the tools to be a major
champion, but much of the week was
spent discussing his failure to comply
with the game’s dubious dress code.
Golf has made decent strides in
recent years with its attitude to
women, children and slow play, but
every now and then it lets itself down,
or at least some of its more traditional
advocates do. Inexplicably their
objections to the game’s latest fashion
statement appeared to be trending on
Twitter.
While much of the “furore” was
light-hearted, it must seem utterly
preposterous to those chancing upon
the controversy that Hatton’s smart-
but-casual contribution to the
fairways was even exercising minds.
No wonder children who are at last
being persuaded to join their local
junior section continue to desert the
game when they leave school. If this
is golf, might they be better taking up
pool? Or something else that does not
frown upon them if they fail to tuck
their shirt in?
Dress codes make no sense, for
golfers or otherwise.
“Next you’ll be
allowed to wear
jeans,” said one
indignant social
media user in
response to
Hatton’s daring
choice of top,
blissfully unaware
that even a pair of

debate and let golfers

wear what they want

beat-up denims would look more
respectable than long white socks and
a Hawaiian polo shirt. You sometimes
wonder if a bin bag would be deemed
appropriate by the ancient game,
provided it came with a collar and a
pair of tailored shorts. Golfers should
be allowed to wear what they want,
when they want, not least because
they already do.
There have been some abominable
wardrobe malfunctions down the
years, just as there have been some
pretty funky trends set, all of which
were distinctly more risqué than
Hatton’s hood. Jesper Parnevik was
one of the first to play fast and loose
with golf’s clothing conventions. The
upturned bill on his cap became such
a trademark that the European Ryder
Cup team put their logo on the
underside of it.
Then there was Ian Poulter, who set
up his own fashion label and
appeared at the 2008 Johnnie Walker
Classic in a metallic gold shirt and
brown trousers. Poulter’s trousers
became a thing — Union Flag at the
Open, Stars and Stripes at its US
equivalent. In a more subtle brush
with the blue collar, Payne Stewart
went through a spell in which his
knickerbockers and flat cap came in
the colours of the local NFL
franchise.
Clothing and sponsorship deals
have often been responsible for some
of the game’s most memorable garb,
whether it be good, bad or downright
ugly — the final category
being home to Rickie
Fowler’s ankle boots and
John Daly’s, well,
everything. But is any of it
offensive? Tasteless perhaps,
but not offensive.
And yet there are people
complaining about
Hatton’s top, a
sweater that just
happens to have a
hood on it. As Craig
Connelly, the caddie
for Martin Kaymer,
said on Twitter the
other day: “Get a life.”

BBC unhappy after broadcast plan shelved

Alex Lowe Deputy Rugby Correspondent However, all those plans had to be
cancelled on Friday night when PRL
issued a press release which stated the
game would be broadcast live only on
BT Sport, with Channel 5 to show a
highlights package the following day.
The Times understands the BBC was
left bemused and “irritated” by the situ-
ation. “As far as the BBC were con-
cerned it was all systems go,” one source
said. The BBC declined to comment.
