Film The 39 Steps
Film4, 5pm
A remake of Alfred
Hitchcock’s 1935 film,
rather than a fresh
adaptation of John
Buchan’s novel, Ralph
Thomas’s spy thriller
stars Kenneth More as
a man who becomes
embroiled in a deadly
game of cat and mouse
after he witnesses a hit-
and-run. (U, 1959)
the family patriarch
— a multimillionaire
by the age of 40 after
success on Wall Street
and in Hollywood —
aspires to become the
president of the US.
But wartime disgrace
scuppers his dream and
his ambition passes to
his children. And when
his eldest son, Joseph
Jr, dies in a plane crash
the mantle is passed to
sickly John F Kennedy.
The Kennedys:
Tragedy and
Triumph
More4, 9pm
This comprehensive
documentary series
spans the lives of
Joseph and Rose
Kennedy and their
children, revealing how
this one family had
such an influence on
20th-century America.
In the opening episode
small measure down

five-strong cast led
by Alison Steadman
as the bitchy, braying
hostess from hell,
Beverly. Leigh was
embarrassed by the
TV version, saying:
“It is a stage play
that was wheeled
into a television
studio... as a piece
of craft it’s simply
appalling.” It’s not.

BBC Four, 9pm
Mike Leigh’s acidic

Henry VIII:
Rise of a Tyrant
Channel 5, 9pm
“You might think you
know everything there
is to know about
Henry VIII,” narrates
Jason Isaacs at the
start of this three-part
docudrama. And you
probably do: married
six times, executed two
of his wives, big into
banquets. But a team of
Tudor experts are using
a wealth of documents
to tell Henry’s story in
depth, “separating the
man from the myth”
and bringing to life his
“innermost thoughts”.
That’s just a fancy
way of saying this is
exhaustive; so while the
findings aren’t earth-
shattering, the way it is
presented makes it
essential viewing for
history buffs.
