Synoptic situation
High pressure extending across
the British Isles from the north
will bring a settled day to many
places, although a northeasterlyy
fl ow will push a few showers
across eastern Britain. High
pressure remains close by over
the next few days before low
pressure pushes a series of
fronts and associated rain into
northwestern Britain at the
beginning of next week.

O
n this day 240 years ago
the sky turned black and
a fierce thunderstorm
broke out in
Roehampton, at the time
a wealthy village outside London.
Then something terrifying appeared.
“A most furious tornado, or
whirlwind, which left such dreadful
marks of its force and fury, that they
can be but faintly described by the
pen or pencil,” wrote Edward
Edwards, a Royal Academy artist
who knew the area well and made
watercolours of the destruction
[https://bit.ly/2SUdn6I].
As he wrote, “from Lord
Bessborough’s mansion to
Hammersmith, tearing up trees in
its course, and driving them to a
considerable distance; some
buildings were unroofed”. “Of seven
poor persons who took shelter in the
barn in Roehampton Lane, one was
killed upon the spot, another died of
consequence of the bruises he
received [and] the rest were hurt.”
A witness reported that “more
than 200 large elm trees, which
grew on each side of Roehampton
Lane, were torn up by the roots, and
lay in various directions, so as to
block up the road entirely”.
Edwards noted how the tornado
ripped across Barnes Common,
smashing up more trees. It “arrived
at the mill on Barnes Common
which it overturned and beat to
pieces” and surrounding buildings
lost their roofs, shown in another of
Edwards’s watercolours [https://
bit.ly/341q7z3]. The tornado finally
crossed the Thames and inflicted
more damage on Hammersmith,
including the parish church. All told,
the path of destruction reached
three miles, felled hundreds of trees
and left two people dead.
This is more than a historical
curiosity. A study in the journal
Weather described how a
comparable tornado striking
Roehampton these days could be
disastrous. It would cross the A3
dual carriageway close to a busy
intersection, hit the main
Roehampton shopping area, and
pass through a housing estate. The
potential threat to life and damage
could be immense.
