Yesterday’s racing results

The former Team Sky and British

Cycling doctor Richard Freeman either

lost or destroyed data on three different

laptops, a medical tribunal has heard.

Freeman was giving evidence at his

fitness-to-practise tribunal yesterday

in Manchester where he is facing an

accusation that he ordered a banned

substance to dope a rider.

It emerged at the height of the “Jiffy

bag” controversy in 2017 that Freeman,

who denies buying 30 sachets of

Testogel to enhance the performance

of an athlete despite attempting to

cover up the fact that he had it delivered

to the National Cycling Centre, had one

laptop with medical data stolen while

on holiday in Greece in 2014.

Last week at the tribunal it emerged

that he destroyed a second laptop with

a hammer or a screwdriver before it was

examined by forensic experts enlisted

by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Yesterday a Medical Practitioners

Tribunal Service heard how Freeman

was unable to share blood data with the

Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)

because of an issue with another laptop

in August 2011.

Freeman admits to

third ‘loss of data’

delivery Freeman emailed UCI,
informing it that he had “lost my hard
drive and much data”.
Acting for the GMC, Simon Jackson,
QC, said: “This seems to be an unfortu-
nate third occasion when you’ve either
lost or broken a hard drive. What were
the circumstances in which you lost
your hard drive on this occasion?”
Seemingly confused, Freeman
initially claimed it was a reference to
the laptop stolen in Greece. When Jack-
son made clear that he was referring to
something three years earlier, Freeman
said he had not lost a hard drive in 2011
but had not been able to gain access.
“If you’d lost access, surely you would
have said, ‘I am unable to access data,’ ”
Mr Jackson replied. “You wouldn’t say,
‘I’ve lost it,’ or am I being pedantic?”
“I don’t think you are being
pedantic,” Freeman said.
Mr Jackson also suggested that
Freeman had acquired knowledge
about doping after moving into cycling
in 2009 and had put that knowledge to
use, suggesting he was a “gamekeeper-
turned-poacher”.
Freeman replied: “I’d like to think I
was more the gamekeeper of Team Sky.
I can’t comment as a poacher because I
never considered myself a poacher.”
The hearing continues.

South Africa

government in

threat to board

Cricket

The South African government has
threatened to intervene in the running
of the country’s cricket authority,
risking action from the International
Cricket Council.
The sports minister Nathi Mthethwa
has written to the acting president of
Cricket South Africa (CSA), Beresford
Williams, highlighting long-running
dissatisfaction at the governing body
and an alleged “failure of leadership to
effectively manage its affairs”. While
Mthethwa says he sees “no value in any
further engagement with CSA”, he has
offered it until October 27 to respond.
The ICC requires national boards to be
independently run but needs a protest
to be lodged or to recognise exceptional
circumstances to begin investigating.
England are pencilled in for three
one-day internationals and three T20s
in November and December, though
talks continue given the complications
of the Covid-19 pandemic.
6 John Reid, the former New Zealand
captain and the country’s oldest Test
player, has died at the age of 92. During
a Test career spanning 1949 to 1965,
Reid won 58 caps and became one of
the game’s leading all-rounders. He
went on to become a match referee.

H

ollie Doyle
yesterday
broke her own
record for the number
of winners in a year

by a woman jockey in
Britain when riding
State Occasion to
victory at Kempton
Park last night. It was
her 117th victory of
the campaign (Rob
Wright writes).
The feat is all the
more remarkable as
racing was suspended
for 75 days because of

the coronavirus
pandemic.
“When I broke the
record last year, in the
back of my mind I was
always thinking about
breaking it again this
year, as I didn’t want
it to be a one-off,”
Doyle, 24, said. “So
I’m delighted to have
achieved that goal.”
