however, it signified much
more than that. The many
memorials, which still
survive, tell of victims leaping
from their windows and being
caught mid-air by sniper fire,
or others being shot down
with equal brutality in their
attempts to swim to freedom
across the River Spree. By
now, of course, the wall had
lost its potency. Nonetheless,
the fragments that people
took away with them held an
almost sacramental
significance. They were
powerful carriers of the
message of freedom and
flourishing, that is of life, and
life in all its abundance.
Of course, practices like
this are hardly new. Picking
up those semi-sacramental
patterns, they have
throughout been part of the
Christian spiritual tradition.
So, for example, at
Heavenfield, near Hexham,
the cross erected by King
Oswald (later St Oswald)
before the battle that would
unite the Northumbrian
kingdoms, would be clipped
and chiselled by pilgrims for
centuries. Splinters from that
cross betokened God’s
presence in Christ; they spoke
of another more brutal cross
at Calvary. Similarly, at
Bamburgh, the pillar against
which St Aidan was leaning
when he died also became an
object of devotion, picked
away at by countless pilgrims
in the centuries that followed.
In Assisi, St Francis is buried
well below even the lower
basilica and with iron bands
stretched around his final
resting place to protect it.
Over two millennia, the cult
of relics — of saints and of
holy places — became very
strong.
In a secular age it is easy
to dismiss all this as
superstition, but the roots
go far deeper. Shrines and
other such places of dramatic
religious significance
immediately hold a
sacramental place within the

Christian theological
tradition.
Orthodoxy, in its widest
sense, has always proclaimed
the universal power of God,
that is God’s omnipresence,
but we mortal human beings
need something more focused
both to remind us of and to
feed us with the divine
presence. The sacraments
themselves are part of this,
but a sacramental religion
says something much
broader still. Ordained
ministers have a sacramental
role; churches and chapels
point beyond themselves. The
closure of churches during
the early stage of the
pandemic brought this
sharply into the spotlight.
Even returning to the New
Testament, the appearances
of Jesus after his resurrection
were similarly sacramental in
their power.
So, when Klaus and I and
countless others were
chipping away at that
decaying concrete, we were
pointing beyond to a life of
true flourishing and
fulfilment, as Jesus reflected,
“life and life in all its
abundance”. The life to which
the wallpeckers pointed is
rooted in a freedom nurtured
at its best through two
millennia of Christian
culture. Wallpeckers and
others were and are latter day
apostles of that essential
Christian belief and virtue —
the doctrine of hope. It is a
doctrine which we ignore at
our peril in a culture and
ambience of such radical
uncertainty.

V

ery early in the
1990s I travelled to
Germany to stay
with my friend
Klaus; the aim was
to improve my German.
During my stay, we spent
some time in Berlin. The Wall
had only fairly recently been
breached, with freedom now
taking on a new meaning.
One of the most powerful
moments for both of us was to
walk side by side through the
Brandenburg Gate. Klaus had
done this just once before, in
early 1945 as a young cadet
who would happily never
become a fighting member of
the Wehrmacht. There was
something very poignant
about this short walk for both
of us. Here was a German
passing through this
celebrated former border
crossing for the first time in
almost 50 years and with an
Englishman at that.
Yet there was one other
episode of almost equal
moment. Travelling further
along to the fast decaying
“security wall”, we saw small
groups of people chiselling
away pieces of the very poor
concrete and pocketing
symbolic fragments of that
notorious and divisive barrier.
Prompted by this historic
sight, Klaus and I repaired to
his car, found a small
spanner, and chipped away
tiny pieces of the fabric of the
now threadbare Iron Curtain.
We became, in the colloquial
German of the time,
Mauerspechte, which
translates as wallpeckers.
On one level, this could all
sound very trivial, simply an
indulgence of populist
enthusiasm. Remembering
Berlin’s dramatic history,

Credo
