he parish of Brewham sits deep in
Somerset’s lush green countryside.
It’s just three miles from newly
fashionable Bruton, but the dramatic
elevated view from Brewham House is
timeless; King Alfred’s Tower, on the
Stourhead estate, is the only visible manmade
form, rising up from the ridge in the distance.
It was this view that came to mind three
years ago when Charlotte Green discovered
that her husband, the former England rugby

player Will Green, had sold their house
while she was giving birth to their fourth
child, Hector. Unfazed, the 46-year-old stylist
learnt that Brewham House had just been
put back on the market (“We’d seen it earlier
in the year and knew it was special”), so with
three-day-old Hector in arms and their other
children – Arthur, now 16, Matilda, 13, and
Primrose, 11 – they revisited the 17th-century
manor and seized the opportunity.
Charlotte, formerly of Vogue and Tatler,

took the unexpected life change in her
Yorkshire stride. “I love a house move, but it
was chaos,” she says smiling. “Will was on site
in Leeds and Suffolk and I was in the middle
of a huge styling job, in transit with a baby.”
Constructed in local stone, the oldest
part of the manor and the anterior barn
have been linked up over the years, creating
an L-shaped spread to the rear of the neat
Georgian frontage with its Doric pilasters
and semicircular fanlight. “It’s all quite
