FILTER BY ATTRIBUTE
Sometimes you may hide layers by clicking their
Eye icons in the Layers panel to turn them off. But
when you’re working in a document with lots of
layers, you may want to find those hidden lay-
ers quickly, and here’s how to do that: Choose
Attribute in the Kind menu, and in the next
drop-down, choose Not Visible from the various
options. This will either show the hidden layers,
or selected items in layers that are turned off.
FILTER BY SMART OBJECT
This is a really handy way to quickly find smart
objects in your files, especially if you have to go
into them to make any changes. When you select
Smart Objects in the Kind menu, not only will it
search and find them, it will also give you a row
of icons to help drill down into the smart objects
by looking for things such as missing links. Once
identified, you can go relink and fix any broken
smart objects in your file to prevent warnings.
FILTER BY SELECTION
The last filter we’ll look at will help you quickly build
a stack of layers that don’t have specific attributes.
First, make sure you don’t have any layers active,
and from the Kind drop-down, choose Selection.
Your Layers panel will now be empty. Next, switch
to the Move tool (V), and hold down the Command
(PC: Ctrl) key to temporarily activate Auto-select.
Then just click on any items in your file to select
that layer, and once it’s selected, whether its text,
shapes, or smart objects, it will appear in the Layers
panel. Keep clicking to add as many layers as you
want. Now it’s easier and faster to work on those
particular layers.
So that’s the layer filter options! There are plenty
more for you to try, but this tutorial was to make
you aware of this function by showing just a few
examples. I hope it will make your layer man-
agement a lot easier when you’re working with
multi-layered or multi-artboard files. I know once
I discovered this feature, it made my layer man-
agement slicker and helped me be more organized
when it comes to layer naming and structuring. n
