off and following Lorelei to Atlas’
temporary camp in the Spillways
tunnels. Here we find a potential side
mission offered by a civilian NPC,
entitled ‘Maliwanabees’. The civilian
quest-giver tells us that a pair of
Maliwan psychos, Rox and Max, are
trying to ‘out-warcrime’ each other,
and one of them killed her family.
She wants us to find out which one
did it and kill them in retribution. So
it’s back out into the Spillways to
search for clues as to who did the vile
deed. Rox and Max are both claiming
responsibility, and the clues don’t
give us any more indication of who
actually did it, so the civilian tells us
she doesn’t care which one we kill.
It doesn’t take long to locate Rox
and Max’s base in the Outrunner, and
a short skirmish later, Rox is dead,
though weirdly we’re forced to leave
Max alive. Ah well, back to the civ for a
small dollars and experience reward,

at which point
she tells us we
should probably go
kill Max as well. Instead,
we decide to crack on, and
we follow Lorelei. Of course, we’re
not going to get there without a
massive fight, are we? The streets
of the futuristic metropolis are
swarming with Maliwan and COV
psychos. With the odds properly
stacked against us this time, it’s a
tense battle in which we get to see
some of the game’s environmental
destructibility. Cover degrades as it’s
shot; a neat touch which means you
can’t just cower behind a concrete
barrier, crate or other handy bit of
cover; there are a couple of layers
to be shot away but then you’re
exposed and need to keep moving.
Your character can slide into cover,
sprint, jump and all the usual FPS
moves, while smart use of Action
