LEFT: You can smash
through some
scenery with only
minor damage, such
as a cracked
windscreen. But if
you slam into a rock
wall or a vehicle,
you’re probably
gonna sustain some
internal damage.

BELOW: If an impact
is particularly hard,
it’s enough to cause
terminal vehicle
damage and get you
disqualified from the
round. Less serious
damage can be
repaired mid race, but
it will impact your
final time.

“We carefully study photo and video
reference material to see how
different bodywork materials deform and
dent, and details such as how a car’s bumper
willbehave when it’s clinging on to a single
mounting point.”

“We work closely with real rally
car manufacturers. Some request
that certain parts of the bodywork never
detach during accidents, and they all make
it clear that the driver cell should never be
damaged in a crash.”

“Damage is accurate to what you
impact with. If you slide sideways
into a lamp post, damage is confined to
that area of the car. But if you slide into a
wall you’ll take impact across the entire
side of the vehicle.”

“Punctures and damaged wheels
have an obvious effect on your
handling, but we model a great deal under
the hood too. If you damage your radiator,
your engine will overheat and your
performance will suffer.”

“Over the years the underlying
mechanical damage systems have
been greatly improved, and now we’re able
to represent relationships between
components and knock-on effects better
than we ever have before.”
