by his lovingfamily.Hesuccumbedto illness
associatedwithhis 30-yearbattlewithbrain
cancer.John was bornin Cleveland,Ohioon
May 2, 1951to Ferol BruceVernonand Mary
Vernon.Johnwasthe happycamperof the
familywithaquick wit and endearingcharm.
He grewup lovingcars,actingin playsand
runningtrack.Runningwouldbecomeone
of his lifelongpractices.Hegraduatedfrom
DukeUniversityin 1973as areligionmajor,
especiallyfascinatedwithEasternReligions.
Oneof his favoriteprinciplesof Buddhism
becameapersonalmantra:“Egois the causeof
all suffering.” He graduatedfromUniversityof
VirginiaDardenSchoolof Businessin 1976and
thenmarriedhis longtimegirlfriendMichele
Ruddyin Raleigh,NC in 1977.He wasa
foundingpartnerof HospitalityPartners,a
hotelmanagementcompany in the DC area,
for over 25 years.Helovedbuilding businesses,
but nevertookworktoo seriously,infusing
everythinghe did with his ebullientnatureand
goofysenseof humor.Hebecameamentor
and belovedmanagerto so manythat worked
for him over the years.In1980 Johnwelcomed
his first child,his son Ferol into the world,and a
few yearslater his daughterEmily.Fatherhood
was another role he took seriously,but infused
withjoy andlaughter.Atage 39, he was
diagnosedwith an astrocytomainhis brain and
givenonlyafew yearsleft to live.However,
his radiationtreatmentwassuccessful,and
his long-termsurvivalwas aidedby his ever-
presentpositiveattitude.From 2006-2013John
hadseveralstrokes,duetopreviousradiation
treatmentsweakeninghis brain, whichbegan
to chipawayat his mobilityand abilityto
communicate.Even whenconfrontedwith the
indignitiesof his strokes’effects,heinsistedhe
was “Outstanding!”his favoritephrase,and a
tributeto his eternaloptimism.John is survived
by his wifeof 43 years,MicheleVernon(nee
Ruddy);his two children,Ferol M. Vernonand
EmilyVernon;threegrandchildren;aswell as
his two oldersiblings,Ferol BruceVernonJr.
and Lynne Vernon.Memorial serviceat alater

consultant,speakerand writer.Hewas always
astaunchadvocatefor women’sequalityand
rights,and duringthis timehe switchedhis
focusfromparticlephysicsto understanding
andcombattingstructuralracismandsexism
withinthe scientificcommunityandelse-
where.Heput his findingsinto the monograph
“Partnership2.0:Why are thereso few women
in the STEMfields?”whichhe wasin the
processof expandingfor publication.
As an adult,Markbecamean avid cyclistand
continuedto enjoycampingand hiking.On
the technologyfronthe was an earlyadopter
and strongendorserfor all thingsApple,and
he becameastaunchpractitionerregarding
onlinesecurity,ashis emailsignatureattested.
He madefriendsat everyturnwhereverhis
studiesand workled him. He was akind, well-
respectedmanwith an exceptionallycreative
mind,whonurturedand treasuredhis many
friendships,and whenhe laughed,it was
one of thosedeepbelly-laughsthatwould
frequentlyend in tearsof joy.
Markwas alovingbrother,uncle,cousinand
friend.He was deeplycommittedto his family
and closefriends.Hetook specialcareto
visit regularlyand to checkin, especiallyas
relativesand friendsagedor becameinfirm.
Mark’sgenerosityof spiritand his dedication
to fosteringtheserelationshipsthat wereso
importantto him is agood reminderfor all of
us to visit and connectas muchas possible
with thosewe love.
Markwas predeceasedby his parents,Judith
GuildStewartandRichardLaneFrautschi
(Brooke).He is survivedby his threesiblings,
AnneHaydenFrautschi(Julie),ScottSargent
Frautschi(Joan)and Tyler LaneFrautschi(Tif-
fany)as well as his nephewKevin Frautschi;
threenieces,LaurenFrautschi,SaraFrautschi
and SamanthaFrautschi;and cousinsHenry
Watkin(Rita),MelWatkin(JerryMontieth),
TedWatkinand KymWatkin-Statham(Geoff
Statham).Whilehe neverhad childrenof his
own,he treatedhis niecesand nephewas if
they were.
At this time the date for acelebrationof Mark’s
life is still undetermineddue to the Covid-19

switchedto Leicas,whichhe felt maintained
superiordesignstandards.Many of you read-
ing this will surelyrecallposingfor him over
the years.Itwas nevergoingto be aquick
photoshoot,but the resultwas alwaysgoing
to be beautiful.
Mark’slove of photographyextendedto a
passionfor movies,especiallysciencefiction.
His favoritemovie was“2001:ASpace
Odyssey”by StanleyKubrick,his favoritepro-
ducer.Inadditionto enjoyingamovie’sstory,
Markhad greatfun lookingfor flawsand errors,
suchas areflectionshowingthe cameracrew
off screen,or someonewearingan itemof
clothingfromthe wrongtimeperiod.It was
one of the few gameshe likedto play.
Memoriesof his childhoodwouldbe incom-
pletewithoutmentioningall the wonderful
campingtrips at Kerr Lakewith life-longfamily
friends—theHiskeys,Filleys,Murraysand
others.Mark, his siblingsand theirfamilies
enjoyedafinal trip to the lake in 2019.

graduatedfromChapelHill HighSchoolin
1975,wherehe formedfriendshipshe would
cherishfor the rest of his life.Inadditionto
his academicexcellence,Mark couldbe quite
mischievous.One morningbeforeclasshe and
his friendshijackedthe schoolPA systemand
pipedentertaininglyinappropriaterecordings
overthe loudspeaker.The pranksterswere
nevercaught,and the storyhas providedmany
laughsover the years.
Markstudiedat PennStateUniversitybefore
graduatingwith honorsfromthe Universityof
NorthCarolinaat ChapelHill in 1983witha
Bachelorof Sciencein Physics.Hecontinued
his scientificexplorationsat OhioStateUni-
versitywherehe earnedaMasterof Science
and aPh.D.inPhysics.Hewas aGraduate
ResearchAssistantat OhioStatefrom1987-
1992,spendingthreeyearsin Japan leadinga
teamworkingon the high energyaccelerator
at the KEKLab at Tsukubain the Ibaraki
Prefecture.Hedid additionalpost-doctoral
workas aResearchAssociateScientistat the
Universityof NewMexicofrom 1992 to 1995,
wherehe was on the ground-breakingteam
thatco-discoveredthe top quark,whichis
the mostmassiveof all observedelementary
particles.The followingyear he was aResearch
AssociateScientistat Texas Tech University,
and in 1996he joinedJohnHopkinsUniversity
as an AssociateResearchScientist.
In the late 1990sMarkwas activelyinvolved
in the Y2K problemand quicklybecamean
internationallyrecognizedexpert.He partic

Markwasbornin Northampton,Massachu-
settson March20, 1957,and soonthereafter
movedto ChapelHill, NorthCarolinawhere
the familygrewto includeAnne,Scottand
Tyler.
As achild Marklovedfiguringout how things
worked.Everythingfromlightswitchesin his
first-grade classroomto blackholesin outer
spacewereexamined,takenapartif possible,
andsometimesevenimproved.Chemistry
kits,rocketsand aGilberterectorset were
his favoritetoys.But he and his friendsalso
foundfun in everydayitems,suchas the
day theyusedcommonbakingingredients
to build—andignite—anincendiarydevicein
the kitchen.(He neverdid sharethat recipe!)
Markwasanatural scientistwhodelighted
in comingup withingenuoussolutionsto
everydayproblems,and whowouldstudy
anythingthatpiquedhis curiosityuntilhe
figuredit out.
Musicwas anotherof his lifelongloves,every-
thingfromthe Beatlesto CarlySimonto Pat
Methenyand mostclassicalmusic.Hetook
greatpridein his carefullycuratedrecord
collectionand the high-endstereoequipment
on whichhe enjoyedhis music.Inhis early
teenshe beganalife-longpassionfor photog-
raphy.Hebuilt adarkroomin the basement,
and his first job was at Foister’s—ChapelHill’s
iconiccamerastore on FranklinStreet.From
thosedayson, Markwas rarely seenwithout

areain 1964wheretheyraisedtheirfour
boys.Once her boyswereno longerathreat
to the community,she startedacareerat
Bethesda-ChevyChaseHighSchool,working
as an assistantin the VicePrincipal’sOffice.
She had awonderfulcircleof friendswho
supportedher throughlife’sjoys and greatest
challenges.She was mosthappyhostinglunch
or dinner,especiallyThanksgivingwithher
extendedfamily,and an annualNew Year’sEve
dinner,whereguestswererequiredto predict
eventsfor the comingyear,especiallywhat
wouldwaxand wane.She servedfor many
yearsas an usherat the ArenaStageand a
volunteerat HillwoodGardensand the Inwood
House.Anne caredfor many,many peoplein
her longlife,and passedon this givingtrait
to her youngestson,John,whowaswith
her everystep of the way in her final years.

VA and grewup in Baltimore(Dundalk),
Maryland.Duringhis youth,he was aproud
memberof the DundalkDrumand Bugle
Corp.Atage 18, he joinedthe Marines
duringthe KoreanWaraspart of the 11th
EngineerBattalion.Bill playedtrumpetand
buglein the MarineCorpBand including
performancesat the OrangeBowland the
Rose Bowl. While stationedatCamp
Pendleton, CA nearthe end of his service,
Bill had the thrill of his life.Heand 11 other
Marineswereassignedto RKOStudiosto
portray Marinesin aJohn Wayne movie,
FlyingLeathernecks.Bill nevergrewtiredof
tellingstoriesofthe filmingofthe movie
and his interactionswithJohnWayne and
RobertRyan.He was an avid JohnWayne
fan throughouthis life and in lateryears
openedhis own “JohnWayne Museum”to
displayhis wealthof memorabilia.
Bill is survivedby his lovingdaughterand
only child,Dr.DarleneAtkinsand by his son-
in-law,Dr. RonVandeLoo.Heisalso survived
by his brotherRobertAtkins"Bunky",sister-
in-law,Margie Finamore,many loving
niecesand nephews,and manycherished
friends.Helost his belovedwife,RitaAtkins,
in 2009after54 yearsof marriage.Also,he
was predeceasedby his two oldersisters,
MargZorn and GloriaStrebeckand his best
friendand brother-in-law,John Finamore.
Bill workedas abricklayerin his younger
daysand he designedand builtthe house
thathestilllivedin.Billwentontowork
in the wholesalewineindustryand then
becameareal estatebrokerwhospecial-
ized in the sale of liquorstores.
Bill’spassionswerehis family,his friends,
his real estatecareer,and his JohnWayne
Museum.All thosewhoknewBill would
agreethat he was areal “character”.Bill
had agreat senseof humor,was aborn
storyteller,and he embracednostalgia
whilealwaysseekingto learnnewthings.
At age 80, he got his first computerand
becameahuge fan of Facebook.

prognosticfactors,diagnosticencoding,and
the morphologyof pre-cancerouslesions.At
the Collegeof AmericanPathologists,heiniti-
atedthe publicationof practiceprotocolsfor
anatomicpathology.All laboratoriesare now
requiredto use theseprotocolsas partof
accreditationwiththe College.His pioneering
workin developingcancerstagingsystems
includesThe Collegeof AmericanPathologists’
SystematizedNomenclatureof Pathologyand
SystematizedNomenclatureof Medicine.In
1976,he co-authoredThe World HealthOrgani-
zation’sInternationalClassificationof Diseases
for Oncology(ICD-O),offeringthe staging
guidelines,knownas the TNMStagingSystem,
for solidtumorsobservedin clinicalpractice.
Formany years,heservedas the UnitedStates
representativeto the TNMCommitteeof the
InternationalUnionAgainstCancerin Geneva.
He servedas Chairof the AmericanJoint

St. Louis,MO. He was graduatedfromSt. Louis
UniversityHighSchool,wherehe participated
in Air Force ROTC.Heearnedhis Bachelor
of Sciencedegreein Chemistry,with aminor
in Philosophy,fromSt. LouisUniversityand
earnedhis MedicalDegreefromSt. Louis
UniversityMedicalSchool.He completedhis
first Postdoctoral Fellowship,inMicrobiology,
at the WistarInstitutein Philadelphia,PA and
subsequentlycompletedhis internship,resi-
dency,and aPostdoctoral Fellowshipin Pathol-
ogy at Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke’sMedical
Centerin Chicago.
In 1969,he joinedthe US PublicHealthService
andthe NationalInstitutesof Healthand
eventuallythe Laboratoryof Pathologyof the
