in her sister Lucy
(Fiona Button) and
best friend, Scoopy
(Cariad Lloyd). The
lightness of tone
allows for a playful
examination of meaty
themes, especially
when it comes to the
loneliness and fury
of Sara’s brittle mum,
superbly played by
Juliet Stevenson.Holland) — a black
woman who serves
in Sara’s local snack
bar and whom she
wants to befriend —
conclude with Luna
challenging Pascoe
for “sneaking me into
your programmes
so it’s not all white
people”. It’s rescued
from any potential
self-indulgence by the
zinginess and warmth
of Pascoe’s writing andConaty’s GameFace,
Pascoe ramps up the
meta-fictionalising
so intensely it’s as if
she has embarked
on a shotgun marriage
with a novel by Flann
O’Brien. Pascoe’s
breaking of the third
wall is so amped up
that her family later
roll into her rink and
compete for a place in
the narrative. Scenes
with Luna (Casha painful separation
from a boyfriend. “I am
going to destroy your
faith in love,” she says
with a winning smile.
So far, so typical angsty
TV comedy laced with
the familiar aromas of
white wine and finding
happiness in a hostile
world. Yet while this
has elements of other
recent, highly personal
female-led shows such
as Fleabag and RoisinViewing Guide
