Following on from the feature on allergies in our May issue, which looked at the tragic
and avoidable death of 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, we were relieved
to learn that Pret A Manger will be removing allergens from 70 of its products. The
popular high-street chain will now label every freshly made sandwich or baguette
with a full ingredients list, and there’ll be touchscreen tablets installed in every
outlet to help customers with food allergies identify products that are safe to eat.
Natasha suffered a fatal allergic reaction
to sesame on board a plane after eating a
baguette from a Pret A Manger outlet at
Heathrow airport. Sesame was not listed as
an ingredient of the sandwich, but Natasha
soon developed an itchy throat, before
experiencing breathing difficulties on
board. Despite her father administering
two shots from her EpiPen, she died
in hospital later that day. Her parents
are currently campaigning for stricter
regulations to apply to all businesses selling
food that is made and packaged on site.
