    manyvisitorsandnativesmiss.Therearesectionsthat
    feellikethecountryside,whereyou’resurroundedby
    forest,partswithhistoricbuildings,built-upcity
    streetsandindustrialbuildings,andotherswithwide,
    emptyspaces.Therearehiddengemsandcuriosities,
    likethe‘nakedladies’statuesofYorkHousein
    Twickenham,ortheSurreyDocksCityFarm,where
    youcanfeedthegoatsorpickupa jar of local honey.

Thisisoneofthemostspectacularlegsofthe
PennineWay,inCountyDurham.Youcandoit allin
one,fantasticdayorbreakit up(stayjustoffrouteat
LangdonBeck).Youstartoffinprettymeadows
alongsidetheRiverTees,througha beautifulvalley,
thenit’sa rockyscrambleupalongsidethewaterfall
CauldronSnoutfora viewofanimpressivedam.
ThenyougoacrosspartoftheNorthPennineMoors
andfinallyencounterHighCupNick– a glacialbowl
thatlookslikeanice-creamscoophasbeentakento
thelandscape.It’sawe-inspiringandyoucanonlyreach
it byfoot.Therearenocarparksnearbyandit’sthree
milesfromthenearestroad– therewardfortiredlegs.

NationalParkandI’dalwayswantedtowalktheSouth
DownsWay.MybestfriendKathyandI coveredthe 100
milesoverfourweekendsin 2017 and2018,stayingin
pubswithrooms.Wedidit the‘wrong’wayandstarted
inEastbourne.Onthefirstdaywemadeit toAlfriston
andonthesecondasfarasLewes,andthatweekendwas
myfavouriteofthewholeroute.Youhavecliff-topsea
views,beautifulwoodlandstrailsandquaintvillages.We
wereblessedwiththeweatherand,whenI thinkofthat
time,I seeblueskiesandfieldsofgoldenoilseedrape.It
washarderandhillierthanI expected,butit madeus
reallyfit.I fellinlovewithwalking– it gives you such
headspace,it’sa movingmeditation.

Thisshortbutsteepwalkreallydoestest
yourstaminaasyouascendto2,907ft.Thepay-offsare
thebeautifulviewsacrossSouthWalesandtheBristol
Channel.I’vewalkedthiswell-madepathsomany
timesandinallweathers– it’salwayschallenging(no
surprisethatthemilitaryspecialforcestrainonthese
hills).Thehardesttimewasinthesnowandthehail
andwind,butit’sparticularlylovelyonsummerdays.
Wedothestraightupandbackroute.It’spopular,so
youwon’tbealoneorgetlost.Bewarned:it canbevery
windyatthetopandtheweathercanchangequickly.
Weekendsareverybusy,whendogwalkerstaketothe
hills.StartatthePontarDafNationalTrustcarpark
andwalkacrossthesmallstream.It’sbestdonein
walkingboots,andalwaystakewateranda fewsnacks.
