ELENA NOEL SANTOS,a photo editor
on the Culture desk, has been
looking at the night skies with her
“Goodnight Moon”-loving son.
Here are a few things that are also

in her orbit.

THE BLUE PLANET
TELEVISION

The “Blue Planet” documentary series
(streaming on Amazon Prime Video) is
gorgeously shot, with stunning scenes of
the ocean wild. Here’s one pop culture
takeaway: In Season 1, Episode 2, we get a
glimpse of Phronima, the deep sea crea-
ture said to have inspired the “Alien”
movies.

PETE YORN’S QUARANTINE
CONCERTS
MUSIC

Longtime Pete Yorn fan here, and I’m
thrilled to stream his shows. This summer,
he performed his debut and sophomore
albums from his family home in the Cali-
fornia desert (archived at PeteYorn.veeps
.com). During the pandemic, it’s a great
time to revisit lyrics such as “waiting over
here for life to begin” and “come back
home for another year.”

THE SEASHORE BOOK
BOOK

While taking a break from all things Elmo
(we love Elmo in this house!), I’ve turned
to “The Seashore Book,” a children’s book
that adults can enjoy. Wendell Minor’s
watercolor illustrations are dreamy, and
Charlotte Zolotow’s text is serene: “Out-
side, the lighthouse is flashing golden
gleam on, golden gleam gone.”

PERRY MASON
SOUNDTRACKS

I could not watch HBO’s new “Perry Ma-
son” series (too grisly), but the “Park
Avenue Beat” theme song has been a joy.
With the show’s comeback, I’ve been
listening to the original by Fred Steiner,
followed by Terence Blanchard’s new
version, on repeat. Both are glorious.

@ECAGLAGE
INSTAGRAM

The photographer Evans Caglage is a
family friend. Lately he has been posting
archival images from his wide-ranging,
nearly 40-year career at The Dallas Morn-
ing News, along with personal shoots.
“That’s what it’s like being a newspaper
photographer, there’s always variety,” he
said in a phone interview. I’ve found it a
fun look back at his visually inspiring feed,
starting with this image he took outside a
church in Mykonos, Greece, in the ’80s.

THIS WEEK FROM THE ARTS DESK

As many cities across the country cancel Halloween celebrations, we will miss the wild costumes and

rituals of the holiday. These images, from the archive of The New York Times, show Halloween

traditions from the past 70 years: top, goblins, monsters and “other unsavory types” going

trick-or-treating in 1965; center left, revelers in Greenwich Village in 1982; center right, children eating

apples from a string at the Police Athletic League Halloween party in 1949; and above, some of the 700

jack-o’-lanterns glowing at Cackleberry Farm in Camden, N.Y., in 1975.
