Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

Simon Stocken of Yorkshire sent
me this gem from India. Plan the
play in 5 ♠ on♥K lead.
How about this natural-looking
line? You win dummy’s ace of
hearts and draw two rounds of
trumps, finishing in dummy with
the king in order to lead and pass
the queen of diamonds, West dis-
carding. You cross to your ace,
return to a third spade in dummy
and lead the jack of diamonds,
ruffing away East’s king. Dummy’s
ten of diamonds is promoted ... but
you can’t reach it. You have to lose
three club tricks — one down.
It’s an annoying deal, for you
appear to have 11 winners — seven
spades, the ace of hearts and three
diamonds. However, communica-
tions are a problem; especially as
letting East win the lead (with the

y

king of diamonds) is clearly fatal,
East firing the jack of clubs
through your king.
As so often, the mistake came at
trick one. You must let West’s king
of hearts win the first trick. West
can do no better than lead a sec-
ond heart and again you withhold
dummy’s ace, ruffing in hand
(there’s a special job for the ace of

y

hearts, which cannot be done until
West’s spades are removed — can
you spot it?). You draw two rounds
of trumps finishing in dummy and
pass the queen of diamonds.
And now comes the really
clever bit. You cash the ace of
hearts and jettison the ace of dia-
monds (key play). You remain in
dummy (this is the crucial point)

yyyy

and can now lead the jack of dia-
monds for a ruffing finesse. East
(say) covers with the king but you

ruff, cross to dummy via the third
spade and can enjoy the promoted
ten-nine of diamonds, discarding
two losing clubs. You made the 11
tricks you started with — seven
spades, three diamonds and the
ace of hearts — but in a somewhat
unusual order.
You can perhaps work out the
winning defence. West has to start
with an improbable low heart. No
longer can you duck dummy’s ace,
for East will win the heart and fire
through the jack of clubs.
Don’t you love that trick on
which the two red aces appear?
