UFC: Khabib retires after victory

Unbeaten lightweight champion Khabib
Nurmagomedov retired from mixed mar-
tial arts after stopping Justin Gaethje with a
triangle choke early in the second round Sat-
urday night during UFC 254 at Fight Island in
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Nurmagomedov (29-0) made the an-
nouncement immediately after he impress-
ively finished his first fight since the July
death of his father and lifelong coach, Ab-
dulmanap Nurmagomedov, who had a
heart problem exacerbated by COVID-19.

NFL: Vegas linemen may be back

The Raiders activated four starting offen-
sive linemen — Kolton Miller, Denzelle
Good, Rodney Hudson and Gabe Jackson
— from the COVID-19 list after they all
tested negative. All four were placed on the
list Thursday because they had “high risk”
contact Monday with fellow starter Trent
Brown before he tested positive for the vi-
rus. All four linemen tested negative through
Saturday and will be eligible to play against
the Buccaneers if they pass one more test
Sunday before the game.
Eagles WR DeSean Jackson will be
sidelined 6-8 weeks with a non-displaced
fracture in his right ankle suffered in Thurs-
day’s win over the Giants.
Bears LB Khalil Mack is questionable
to play Monday night against the Rams be-
cause of a back injury.
The Jaguars placed RB Chris Thomp-
son on the COVID-19 list and activated RB
Devine Ozigbo (hamstring) from IR.

The 49ers placed RB Raheem Mostert^
on IR with a sprained left ankle.
Packers Pro Bowl left tackle David
Bakhtiari won’t play Sunday against the
Texans due to a chest injury. Green Bay also
plans to sit running back Aaron Jones, who
is dealing with a calf strain, the Green Bay
Press-Gazette reported.

SoCCEr: NYCFC snaps skid

Jesus Medina, Maximiliano Moralez
and Tony Rocha scored in a 20-minute span
and New York City FC beat the Montreal Im-
pact, 3-1, at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC (9-8-3)
snapped a three-game winless streak.
In Chicago, Brian White scored in extra
time and the Red Bulls (8-8-4) salvaged a 2-2
tie against the Chicago Fire. Kyle Duncan
scored in the 39th minute for the Red Bulls.

EtC.: Thomas leads at Zozo

With a round of 5-under 67, Justin Thomas
holds a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm in the
Zozo Championship in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Defending champ Tiger Woods could only
manage a 71. Phil Mickelson opened with
seven birdies in eight holes, and played the
rest of the way 2-over for a 67.
Englishmen Laurie Canter and Ross
McGowan share a three-shot lead entering
the final round of the Italian Open in Brescia.
In Greensboro, Ga., Ally McDonald
held onto the lead in the LPGA Drive On
Championship-Lake Reynolds Oconee.
Tyson Fury confirmed in a video
posted on Twitter that his next fight will

Rays can’t dodge defeat, Kershaw

A look back at Game 1 as we look into
Game 5. The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw
threw a gem, one run over six superb
innings. Kershaw is 3-1 this postseason, ERA
2.88, the K count at 31 across 25 innings.
Completely different story for the Rays’
Tyler Glasnow. Steady all year he was
roughed up in the series opener for six runs
in just 4²/₃ innings. Couldn’t find the plate,
issuing a disturbing six walks, and when he
did, Los Angeles’ lineup made him pay.
Glasnow’s postseason record is 2-2, ERA
6.08 and he has fanned 33 in 23²/₃ innings.
So what can we expect in Game 5?
Moderation. The Rays’ bats will be more
productive, having seen Kershaw, and

Glasnow has nowhere to go but up after his
worst start of the year, if not career. That
said, we will still back the Dodgers for 20
units.
-$
What a game. What an ending. Dodgers
led, 4-2. Rays took the lead on Brandon
Lowe’s three-run homer in the sixth. L.A.
reclaimed the lead in the seventh, then
again in the eight. With two on and two out
in the ninth, Brett Phillips’ base hit off
Kenley Jansen ended it. But not before
Randy Arozarena did his best impression of
Daniel Jones, falling on his way to the plate.
We fell as well. Down -788 burthootons.

The postseason struggles of Dodgers
ace Clayton Kershaw are known
and brought up constantly, but he
has a chance to continue to
change that narrative on
Sunday in Game 5 of the World
Series against the Rays.
Kershaw has allowed three
runs or fewer in each of his four
starts in these playoffs, and is
coming off a tremendous
Game 1 start in which he
allowed one run while
striking out eight in six
innings. Overall, he
has logged 25
innings with just
three walks, a 2.88
ERA, and 11.2
strikeouts per
nine innings.
Kershaw will
be supported by
a lineup that has
led MLB in both
runs and home
runs in the
regular season
and entered Saturday
with 25 home runs in 15
postseason games.
It has been far from an
ideal postseason for many

of the Rays’ starters, including Tyler
Glasnow, who has a 6.08 ERA in five
starts and has given up at least four
runs in three of his last four
starts. Walks have been a big
culprit. He is averaging 5.3 per
nine innings, while his
strikeouts per nine innings has
fallen from 14.3 in the regular
season to 12.5 in the
postseason.
The Rays as a team entered
the weekend hitting .208
during the playoffs. The Dodgers
have scored three runs or
more in 25 of their last 27
games entering Saturday,
so it will be difficult for
the Rays bats to keep up
and for their bullpen to
get outs.
THE PLAY: Dodgers
to win Game 5,
moneyline -154.
