The dropped stitches in this pattern make squares in the rows
appear from thin air.

Ch a multiple of 4 sts plus 3.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hk and ea ch across, change
color, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *ch 2, sk 2 sc, dc in
next 2 sc; rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 1st 2 sc, *ch 2, sk ch-sp, sc in next 2 dc; rep
from * across to end, change color, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st 2 sc, *dtr in next 2 sts 3 rows below (in
front of ch-sps), sc in next 2 sc; rep from * across, change
color, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.

Row 6: Sl st in ea sc across, change color, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in ea sc 2 rows below, change color, turn.

Rep rows 2–7 to desired length.
