When you use one color for all the double crochet rows and
another for the rest, the resulting fabric looks like the second
color is bursting out of the first in little curls.

Ch a multiple of 4 sts plus 2.

Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hk and ea ch across, change
color, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in ea dc across to t-ch, sc in top of t-ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), sk 1st 2 sc, dc in next sc, dc in
1st sk sc, ch 3, turn, sl st to 1st dc, turn, 5 sc in ch-3 sp, *[sk
next sc, dc in next sc, dc in sk sc] twice, ch 3, turn, sl st in
2nd prev dc, turn, 5 sc in ch-3 sp; rep from * across to last sc,
dc in last sc, change color, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc btw ea set of crossed dc
across (working in front of the sc), dc in top of t-ch, turn.

Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in ea dc across, change
color, turn.

Rep rows 2–5 to desired length.
