This pattern’s biggest challenge is in keeping the colors
straight. The stitches are simple—either a shell or a sin-
gle crochet and chains. After a main color row, you always
turn, and after the contrasting color row, you never turn.


Shell (sh): [(Dc, ch 1) 3 times, dc] in st indicated.


Ch a multiple of 8 sts plus 2.


Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sk 3 ch, sh in next
ch, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch; rep from
across, turn.


Row 2: Join new color to 1st ch-1 sp with sl st, [sc, ch
5, sc] in ch-1 sp, ch 5, sk next ch-sp, [sc, ch 5, sc] in
next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, sh in next ch-1 sp, ch
1, sk next ch-1 sp; rep from
across, dc in last sc, do not
turn.


Row 3: Ch 5 with prev color, sk 1 ch-1 sp on sh 2 rows
below, sh in next ch-1 sp on sh below, ch 1, [sc, ch 5, sc]
in next ch-1 sp on next sh, ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, [sc, ch
5, sc] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from
across, turn.


Row 4: Rep row 3 with next color, do not turn.


Row 5: Ch 4 with prev color, [sc, ch 5, sc] in next ch-1
sp on next sh, ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, [sc, ch 5, sc] in next
ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 1 ch-1 sp on sh 2 rows below, sh in next
ch-1 sp on sh below, ch 1; rep from
across, tr in 4th ch
