Using extended single crochet in this pattern lengthens
the plaid design and makes a fabric that is thin enough
for garments.
Extended Single Crochet (esc): Insert hk into next st and
pull up a lp, yo and pull through 1 lp on hk, yo and pull
through last 2 lps on hk.
Ch a multiple of 4 sts plus 3.
Row 1 (RS): Esc in 3rd ch from hk and ea ch across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as esc), esc in ea st across, change
color, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in ea st across, change color, turn.
Rows 4 and 5: Ch 2 (counts as esc), esc in ea st across, turn.
Row 6: Change color, ch 1, sc in ea st across, change
color, turn.
Row 7: Ch 2 (counts as esc), esc in ea st across, change
color, turn.
Rows 8–13: Ch 2 (counts as esc), esc in ea st across, turn.
Rep rows 2–13 to desired length.
Join yarn to edge at foundation ch, sl st up fabric with 1 sl st
in ea row going up the fabric by holding the working yarn to
the back of the fabric and inserting your hk into the fabric
from the front. Change color, sk 3 sts, sl st up next st,
change color, sl st up next st, sk 7 sts, and sl st up next; rep
sl st embroidery across fabric.
