Chapter 5 • Colorwork Stitch Patterns 131
Jumping Beans.
Adding polka dots to any kid or baby project just makes it
even cuter. Watch that all the odd rows are right sides and
the evens are wrong. The way crochet stitches sit will natu-
rally give you the dot.
Stitch pattern is a multiple of 7 sts.
Crochet a multiple of 10 rows of single crochet, following the
chart for color changes.

TIP
Tapestry vs. Stranded Tips
Deciding whether to carry your yarn strands (stranded) or crochet around them (tapestry) depends on how you
like to crochet, but there are some benefits to each technique. When using tapestry crochet and crocheting
around your yarn ends, you get a nearly reversible fabric which can make projects where you see both sides
(like afghans) really special. When stranding your yarn ends, you can get a less dense fabric since you do not
have to crochet over every yarn end and just need to carry along your end on the wrong side, as you work. For
me, it comes down to numbers: if there are only two colors in my chart, I use tapestry; if there are more, I
strand; if there are more than four colors, I use a yarn bobbin of each color so I do not have four hanks hang-
ing off of one project.
