When crocheted in a large piece, this stitch pattern looks like little
teardrops sprinkled all over a gentle lace.

Shell (sh): [(Dc, ch 1) 3 times, dc] in st indicated.

Single Crochet Spike (sc spike): Insert hk into st indicated 1 row
below last, yo and pull up lp around prev row, yo, draw through lps
on hk.

Ch a multiple of 6 sts plus 2.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hk, ch 1, sk 1 ch, *sc in next ch,
ch 3, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, sk 3 ch; rep from * across to last
5 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, ch 1, sc in last ch,
turn.

This classic stitch pattern always reminds me of cracked-open pis-
tachio shells when I block it open.
