WELCOMEPAGE

ISSUE395|COMPUTER SHOPPER|JANUARY2021 3

I

writethis with an extremely heavy heart. As you’ll have
worked out by now, this is the final ever issue of
Computer Shopper.I’m immeasurably sad and
disappointed it’s all come to an end.
When Ifirst took over asShoppereditor almost fiveyears
ago,the print market was already suffering, as readers and
advertisers increasingly turned to the web.The feeling back
in late2015 was thatShopper–which didn’t have the luxury
of its own websitetogenerateadditional digital revenue –
would last foranother couple of years.
We managed to weather the print decline storm for
several more years, thanks both to the superbShopper
writers, contributors and production staff, who it’s been a
completepleasure working with forthe past four-odd years
and have given so much to the magazine; and to our
knowledgeable,passionateand loyalreaders, who have
kept me on my toes with your plentiful letters.
After 395 issues and almost 33 years of the magazine,
I’m so sorryShopperis closing under my tenure and I
wasn’t able to keep it going.
So,here it is, the final issue.Eagle-eyed readers mayhave
spotted aclue from Mel Croucher that the magazine was
coming to an end, as we reprinted the very first Great
Moments in Computing cartoon in last month’sZygote;
Simon Handbyalso hid acoded message inHelpfilein
Shopper394 (just look at the first letter of each sentence
in one of the answers).
This issue is designed as akeepsake edition, featuring
some of the best contentShopperhas produced. Ispent
many happyhours looking back through favourites from the
past such asMacBiterandUnder Development–selecting
just the one article to rerun from each was adifficult task.
We’ve also updated the build your own PC guide from last
year, soatany point in the future you’ll be able to turn to
this and design your own machine –something Ilike to think
all readers have done or will do at some point. And the past
features chosen all have just as much relevance today: evil
computers are only more of apressing problem now, while
BletchleyPark still needs saving.
All it remains formetosay is ahuge thank you for
supporting the magazine forsomany years; it has been a
pleasure and an honour.May all our interest and enthusiasm
forcomputing continue long intothe future.
