Synoptic situation
A broad area of low pressure
covering most of the Atlantic
to the west of the British Isles
will push numerous sets of
fronts eastwards, bringing thick
cloud and areas of showers or
longer periods of rain. As the
low pressure moves eastwards
on Sunday it will deepen and
bring blustery winds to many
areas. High pressure will
dominate the rest of Europe.

A

wet weekend is in
prospect, with some
boisterous winds
scattering many of the
last leaves hanging on to
the trees. It’s fairly typical
November weather, as John Clare
pictured in his poem Autumn:
“I love the fitful gusts that shakes/
The casement all the day/ And from
the mossy elm tree takes/ The faded
leaf away/ Twirling it by the
window-pane/ With thousand others
down the lane.”
This weekend’s turbulent spell
comes after a largely calm week, as
a large area of high pressure parked
over Europe blocked our usual
weather encroaching from the
Atlantic.
Now the high pressure has eased
away, it’s opened the gates to
depressions from the Atlantic
sweeping over the UK, driven on by
a strong jet stream. Today there will
be outbreaks of rain, but worse is to
come tomorrow with some very
heavy rain and high winds followed
by blustery showers.
If this sounds too gloomy, there’s a
more upbeat forecast next week. In
a surprising twist to the weather, a
fascinating feature appears off the
coast of Portugal and northern
Spain with the arrival of Tropical
Storm Theta — or the remains of
that storm.
This tropical system will drive
warm winds over the UK from as far
as northwest Africa, giving
unusually high temperatures across
most of Britain on Tuesday, possibly
into the high teens celsius.
It is strange to have a tropical
storm so close to Europe, and so late
in the year, but then this has been a
frenzied season of tropical storm
activity, and Theta is the 29th
named storm of the year, setting a
record for the largest number of
Atlantic tropical cyclones in one
year (Weather Eye, November 12).
From Wednesday onwards
temperatures subside although high
pressure will build in from the
southwest, helping to settle things
down once more over the southern
half of Britain, although to the north
low pressure will bring more
unsettled bouts of weather.
