Sacks helped us to see the

chodesh — repetition and
renewal — precisely because
both are essential ingredients
of a life of faith. We are
defined by our timeless
values. Yet, within the context
of our unchanging, divine
ordinances, we are also
called upon to constantly
rediscover them in new and
creative ways.
This was the rare gift of
Rabbi Sacks. He helped us
see the familiar through fresh
eyes. He defied an ever-
increasing wave of secularism
by showing that faith offers
timeless, invaluable
perspectives on the issues of
the day. Amid the pandemic,
faith helps us meet the
immense challenge of
renewing ourselves in the
face of seemingly perpetual

adversity. Rabbi Sacks gave
people of faith renewed pride
and enthusiasm for ancient
wisdom that may have
appeared impenetrable or
obscure to some, while
simultaneously introducing
it for the first time to those
of no faith.
He showed how the divine
could provide us with light in
times of the greatest
darkness. “It is not about
optimism,” he wrote, “but
about courage, the courage to
face an unknown future
knowing that we are not
alone, that God is with us,
lifting us when we fall,
signalling the way.”
May his memory be for an
eternal blessing.

Ephraim Mirvis is the Chief Rabbi of
the United Hebrew Congregations
of the Commonwealth

exceptional wisdom in this
very column, for which he
wrote regularly over the
course of more than 20 years.
He was a master
wordsmith. From his vast
back catalogue of Credo
articles, Rabbi Sacks
produced one of his many
inspirational books, entitled
Celebrating Life, which he
wrote in 2000 after the death
of his father. In it he explored
the themes of coping with
traumatic change, as well as
the importance of cherishing
every precious moment of
life, topics which are more
relevant than ever in these
times of such devastating
global upheaval.
Rabbi Sacks explained that
to overcome periods of
adversity requires of us “a

special kind of thought... the
ability to see things
differently, to alter
perspectives... to see the
things you have seen all along
but never noticed”. It was and
is a profound way to respond
to both change and challenge.
The Hebrew word for year,
shanah, comes from the word
shinun, which means
repetition. The Jewish year is
all about repetition. We have
the same months, seasons
and festivals, year in and year
out. However, the Hebrew
word for month, chodesh,
comes from the word
chadash, which means new. A
new moon ushers in a new
month, which is different
from the last and therefore
brings with it, by definition,
something fresh and distinct.
The Jewish calendar
combines shanah and

H

ow should we
react to the death
of a truly great
person, someone
who has
unquestionably changed the
world for the better?
This is the question faced
by Abraham in this week’s
portion of the Book of
Genesis, which is being read
and studied today, on this
Sabbath, by Jews all over the
world. It is also a question
that many will find
heartbreakingly apt, after the
sudden passing of my
predecessor, Rabbi Lord
Sacks, one week ago.
In the very first recorded
reaction of a person to the
death of a loved one, the
Bible reveals how Abraham
had lost his beloved wife,
Sarah, the great matriarch of
the Jewish people. The Book
of Genesis tells us that he
“came to eulogise Sarah and
to cry for her”. Significantly,
in addition to expressing his
own deep sense of loss and
grief, Abraham hastened to
pay public homage to his wife.
He understood that when a
person passes away, the
achievements of their life are
brought into focus. The
greater the life, the greater
the opportunity to motivate
others with their story. The
eulogy simultaneously gives
honour to the dead and
inspiration to the living.
Sarah was among the most
prominent of ancient role
models. Her faith, wisdom
and leadership would inspire
people for all time.
Reflections at the time of her
death presented an
opportunity to recognise her
greatness in a way that would
preserve her legacy and have
a deep impact on the lives of
so many, over the
generations, to this very day.
I believe the same can be
said about the passing of
Rabbi Lord Sacks.
I am certain that, among
the numerous people
mourning his loss, there will
be many who first became
acquainted with his
